Intermittent central locking problem

When unlocking my car today, the alarm disengaged but the doors did not unlock. Tried several times with the key to no avail.
Opened the door with the key and got in and turned engine on. Tried unlock button 3 times nothing happens. Then 4th time car locks and subsequently unlocks.

Drove to tesco and switched engine off. Pushed unlock button once, nothing happens, 2nd time doors unlock. Since then all back to normal..

Anybody knows what may be causing this intermittent fault? The same thing happened few months back.

just to clarify - unlike other problems on the forum, this affects all doors and fuel cap. so unlikely to be actuators..

I will put money on it that it's the GM5 module. These guys fixed mine http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/

Can I ask you how much and what their turnaround timing was like ??

To be honest I thought they were a little bit steep at £118.80 but I was in a bit of a hurry, but they were great when I rang they and told them I was in a hurry. I posted it on the Monday and had it back by the Thursday.

Before you spend money, check some free things first. As Dario suggested, does the other key work? Also, be sure the keys are well charged. Try reinitialising all your keys.

If those check out, then it's worth replacing the GM5 relay, it'll fail sooner or later anyway. :headbang:

My E85 does this too from time to time. I notice it happens more when the weather is especially damp or if it's been quite hot. Not sure whether or not this actually has any impact tho. I'd be interested to know if it really is the module mentioned above or whether it is simply a case of needing a bit of oil in the mechanism

Been doing a bit of reading and talking to few people.

It most definitely is the GM5, good news is it can be repaired, bad news apparently no less than £70

Do not disregard the key advice. When I first got my car the previous owner had only ever used one key. Until it got fully charged the main symptom was intermittent central locking functionality. First it did nothing, then started to unlock but not lock, eventually it was fine. Charging the key from dead took weeks and several long runs out

Found this video on YouTube. While it's showing a 3 series it's the same module and relay fault. Anyone brave enough to attempt this?!?
