Interior trim

I’m considering changing the appearance of all the aluminium trim so my question is..........

The best deal I’ve found out there is I give the company the trim and collect it a week later. If I remove ALL of the trim, will it be drive able and legal for 1 week.

I guess so, but don’t want to overlook something.

TIA

Not sure what your plans are but I've literally tonight just started carbon fibre wrapping all the trim pieces for sale. Food for thought maybe.

The brushed aluminium ain't worth anything to anyone so seen as I had the left over wrap I figured why not.

In answer to your question, you're unlikely to want to put the centre console back after you have removed it to do it all again. If it's your first time doing it, its a right PITA. I've done it several times now and I still wouldn't want to remove it then put it all back together just to have to do to again even if it is road legal (which it will be).

It depends what you mean by all the trim. Door pulls might be a problem. The real inconvenience will be the centre console which is (a) a bugger to get out; and (b) mounts a number of components, although I think you could drive it with the console frame remounted.

I assume you are having some sort of wrap, make sure you get a good quality one. I recently took a poor quality carbon wrap off my son’s car and it is much improved with the original Alu trim.

I also resprayed a spare set of Alu trims bronze and fitted them to my coupe, but there is such a lot of other silver coloured surface (door pulls, door trims, steering wheel bits etc), that it didn’t look right so I reverted to the original.

So, think carefully, but if you you want to get it done, get the whole lot done.

Worth mentioning that Dan [ref]idej_z4[/ref], did offer to wrap all my trim at a very reasonable rate, but it was too difficult at the time for reasons I won’t go into. If you are looking at CF, that may be the way to go.

Or covering them in (carbon) leather.

By the way: if and when removing the three brushed aluminium pieces (two on the dashboard), one on the centre console, just make sure that you have a proper manual - such as the one from pelican parts - and make sure to stick to that for 100%. If you do that, though time consuming, the job is very manageable.

I do not have any technical background, and did it twice last year (once in the roadster moving from aluminium to carbon leather and once in the coupe moving from wood to aluminium). I did not encounter any serious problems and found it enjoyable jobs.

Of course there will be some swearing involved, as there are difficult steps (such as dealing with the clips behind the dashboard panels and trying not to lose them when taking out the panels and such as taking out and re-inserting the centre console door). Still, if you take your time, follow the manual and are not afraid: all very manageable.
