Interior Restoration

That is a great job done there mate. For all that effort from a newbie, I can see you being a Z4 owner and forum member for quite a while
Great write up and such an unusual topic/mod.Have a pat on the back,it looks so much better

If you're selling the seats, they will be gone fast I reckon. I would not get rid of them as you will not easily find replacement. Re-trim is your best option I think, especially if all still works fine.

Yep, go for a re-leather - I had a set of black sports seats flipped to cream for £700

A brave man indeed - especially when you just got it!

But the black carpet does look much nice with the contrasting seats.

Not sure what you mean about the BT covering up screws though. I've had Z4's with and without and never had any issues removing the rear console with BT. The only difference is the cradle which you can separate from the door.

According to the guides I read, there are 2 screws at the hinges that need to be unscrewed to take the door off. You can then reach the 2 screws at the base behind the door. The hinge screws are covered up on mine and I couldn''t see a way of removing the BT module as there was no plug, so I had to do it all with the rear console in situ.

Your right about the seats, OMG!!!!

Yeah it's a real shame. I can't fault him for trying, but they look like they've been painted rather than dyed (I believe he even used a spray gun which set alarm bells ringing!) I've dyed a set of seats before in an old E36 and it took days of building up very, very watered-down layers of the dye, and the result was really good. Patience is key! If these weren't so buggered I'd give it a go myself, but I don't think it's going to be possible to get the dye off because there's so much of it.

A couple of finishing touches, some brand new OEM black mats and new door handle trim covers. Looking much more like a 5 year old car now 8)

Also, there may still be hope for the bodged leather. I noticed that a corner was peeling on the old knee pad, and sure enough because it has been applied like paint rather than dying the leather, it just peels off without causing too much damage. These small parts only took a few minutes. Obviously two whole seats would take much longer, but it looks I may be able to sort them out myself :)

Fingers crossed for you on the seats. Try some IPA on the stubborn bits. I found it removed leather dye easily.

The car is going to smell a bit boozy after that, surely?!

Looks great, I'd definitely go for a black retrim on the seats, replacement covers from BMW would cost you near on £3k as you need all three parts for both seats.

Nice job. Myself I'd have got the car out once the seats and carpet was up and got someone inside the car while I jet washed it on top and underneath to see where that water was getting in.

It looks so much better with that black carpet. That was the colour scheme in my Coupe.

crazy bad interior condition, hope you got a good price.

to be honest i hope you fix the seats as this botch job is just very poor. good on you for doing this much already!

Thanks! Hasn't cost too much so far which is why it didn't scare me off the car, maybe £200 in total for new carpet/mats, plastics, leather, trim etc. However the seats are another matter as a retrim will cost at least £700, and as you know sports seats are very hard to come by so I don't have much hope of a black set coming up any time soon.

The current plan is to pull all of the champagne 'paint' off them, and restore them to the original sand/grey colour which I actually quite like. Then I will either keep them as is and source some matching grey leather door card inserts, or sell them and buy some black seats. At the moment they are worthless, nobody is going to buy them in this condition. So I am just waiting for a dry day I can spend pulling all of the paint off as it's very time consuming.
