Interim Oil Changes

This makes for a very interesting read. Would certainly be useful for awkward gearbox and diff oil changes too...

However, would any gunk in the engine not be dragged through the engine again? So I wondered how safe/widely used this method was?

Ditto
I'd only ever use old school and warm oil
Drop it and run a litre of Fresh through
As it helps drop out any crud

A litre of fresh oil buddy? I was looking at whether an engine flush would be worth while, on 60k mileage?

I did mine in May after only 1k miles :o since last oil service -no brainer IMHO as i got 6 L of fully synth 10w/60 Fuchs Titan plus filter incl VAT and delviery for 40 squid all in -arrived next day from Opies -very helpful lot .Agree thats prob OTT but it gives me peice of mind for 40 quid and nice to have it overserviced if and when i ever come to sell it on .

Not sure if this helps, but the engine was run for five minutes before drawing the oil out... And the next oil change will be a service, so done 'properly' from the bottom of the engine. I don't know if an engine flush would be worthwhile unless your car hasn't been at least maintained to schedule. Which I know mine has, so I don't think I'm concerned.

Mines on 20k;)
So won't need that for a bit but will do once it goes upwards

Do some research on 'engine flushing' with certain products before doing it, as many say don't do it as those who say it's ok. I was personally advised against it.
If your doing regular oil changes, I don't see the point to be honest.

Flushing not recommended these days generally. I'm confident we drained yours 100% through the dipstick as the 5.5 litres we put back in took it just to the top of your dipstick, plus what we measured in the containers was around the same.

I meant to put that in my post as it can actually cause issues

Thanks folks, after taking advice for you and others, I'll not bother. It gets annual/5K oil changes anyway.

So I've taken to changing the oil in my car halfway between services on the advice of my Indy. He reckons that most of the issues with lifters and bearing shells that we see are associated with simply not changing the oil often enough. My car has done 7/7.5k miles since its last service with just over 8k to go to the next one. It's been driven normally in that time - over winter, not even daily, no hoons of note. This is what came out - by no means terrible, but it certainly ain't at its best. As a result I'm thinking of changing it every 5k miles now. Thanks to srhutch for bringing along his vacuum pump and helping me out - need to get me one of those for next time as it was a doddle to use and only took about 20/25 mins to empty the engine through the dipstick

Wow! I'll be doing mine in the next few weeks. Glad I came across your post, as I was pondering whether I was being overly cautious!

What was your mileage when you did that? Mine just turned the 25k mark

Agreed I do mine v often :)
Mazzers 1k between hahah and that's in the book!

Not sure actually - it's on 59k now, so probably 50k or so as it had a stamped oil change at my indie just before Christmas.

Do you all reset your service interval indicator after the interim service?

No, I don't personally.

No don't reset otherwise it will screw the intervals up and you will be doing your inspection services in half the mileage.

Always factored in an oil swap after every trip to the 'ring and then every 5k miles on my E46M3. Can't hurt for what it costs but i never sucked it out of dipstick as i always preferred to go to a self-serv garage, jack it up on a ramp and drain it for 30 mins until it was all out.
I'm sure sucking ot out through the dipstick is v convenient but with M54B3.0 i'll be using the drain method on that too.
Call me old-school.
