As with anything, there will be the very best (1 owner, meticulous maintenance, no failures) all the way to the biggest ratbah cars.

Well if you can find your nirvana I'd appreciate the details... we'll see what others make of it..I'm not sure there are any typical cars..all the ones I advised buyers on where less than perfect in most cases.. PeeblesZ4 is the master of buying immaculate E89s..
 
I'm not sure how well a car is "looked after" makes much difference to a lot of those failures - injectors etc?

That’s very true…I do wonder on n54 versions that the extra temperatures caused by them running so hot exacerbates some issues like oil leaks…my engine bay is so much cooler now with the Mosselman oil thermostat…

Does seem to be some very random ‘luck’ on some parts..

Yeah I think luck with many parts, and year of manufacture with others.

Some elements will be affected by not being thrashed from cold and not having regular oil changes I'm sure, but it's really hard to assess any correlation and it's even harder to assess to what degree an owner has looked after a car.

I bought an electric car this week, and the buying experience is so much easier. Are the brakes and tyres ok? Yep. Do I want to see the service history? Nope. Is the estimated range as expected? Yes. I'll have it. So much less to worry about.
