Interested in a Z4MC

I've just started looking at Z4MC as my next car and was wondering if anyone knows this car, and if it looks like a good or bad buy??

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/bmw/z4m-coupe/bmw-z4-m-coupe/3903316

What is the normal spec and the main options for one and is there anything to perticuarly watch out for?

Thanks
Colin

Hi and welcome.

That car is quite light on spec, only options I can see are heated seats, aux, 6 CD changer and rear parking sensors.

Common problems are broken rear springs, and on coupes some have rusty tailgates so worth checking that for sure.

Have a look at the FAQ section as more info can be found there.

Looks like a tidy car and a decent price. Personally I'd rather add my own nav unit rather than use the awful OEM one.

Personally I have never got the attraction of black and red leather.....but it looks in great condition. Try and lob £500/£750 off the price

I could be mistaken, but I recognise the backdrop to the photos. I think the owner posted on this forum... he bought the car, got ridiculously excited, vanished for 2 weeks then put it up for sale. That's not an indication of fault with the car but you might want to have a dig back through the 'new owners' section or whatever it's called and see his threads if you can find them, I'm sure someone will!

A broken spring isnt really a big issue. Where on the tailgate do they rust? I assume the z4 doesn't have the boot floor issues that the e46 M3 seems to have?

Hmm RUO rings a bell with me as well.

Perhaps it was posted previously.

Looks tidy and red leather does lift the cabin. If it was black on black - snooze, yawn, dullsville!
Perhaps a little light on spec but might be worth a look if there's a deal to be done.

It's only averaged 8300 miles a year so that's nothing.

Here it is:

Looks a nice example. Think he put it up for more so maybe he has dropped the price.

I love the black and red combo 8)

Well spotted.

So lots mentioned about how great it was. Was going to be a weekend car and couldnt keep it in the garage and now for sale and all gone quiet.
Could well be a change in circumstances and hope all is ok.

Nothing to suggest anything untoward. See what the seller says as to why it's moving on so soon.

That's the one! He just total radio silence. There's every chance the car was bought to make a profit as he's put it up for 1k more than he bought it, not bad for a months work of doing nothing... if he did have the wheels refurbed they can be recoloured for ~£250 and the detailing done himself. I smell a purchase with the sole intention of resale for profit. If it was a change in circumstances you 'could' argue he'd not want to push his luck with it, who knows. Still well within his rights to do that though!

As already mentioned looks like a good example but would require a closer inspection like any car. In my opinion Nav is overrated as a specification feature that is important. Its a good system don't get me wrong, but limits you allow for easy upgrade later. So if thats not important to you then go at least view the car, its a good colour combo, ex forum car? (good or bad thing!) at least a discuss can be kicked off. good luck but best advice I can say is wait for the right one which can take up some time...

Shed alert.
Sorry but my negative side is saying this points to a car not liked by its new owner for whatever reason. As they got excited on here they're probably not a trader so to go from excitement to already selling?. Might be in it to try to make a profit but if I was buying a car from a privateowner who had owned it for weeks only I'd knock the price down a lot or not even be interested at all - worried something might be up

On a positive note it might be perfectly fine,......for a whore car :P

IMO it looks a decent car at a decent price. Never got all that it's a lemon type rubbish...so the owner decided to change car after a few weeks, so what? This happens all the time!

Check the car out properly, like you would any car you're buying (including any forum owner car)...if it's ropey then walk away, but if you think it adds up as it should then go for it!

It does make me suspicious and if his situation had changed he'd be back on here offering up as the perfect car to fellow forum members, unless he found it has a few issues... I'll give it a call and see what is said.

I never said it's a lemon :). M things can get expensive if things go wrong though.
Probably does happen all the time probably because a lot of rubbish cars out there :P
So what? It's not ideal and opens up questions as to why. It could be a case that the car just doesn't live up to their expectations - not everyone likes them. Or it could be that the car has annoying rattles over certain roads that you might not find out until bought it. Could be many other reasons too.

I agree though, if someone is interested and fairly close by then worth checking it out - very closely :)
Given that it's common knowledge these should hold value well, short term ownership should be quite rare moving forward unless so worth looking closely at if it occurs?

Is there an M specialist in that area that could give it a proper going over? The other thread does seem to mention a possible flywheel issue. What sort cost is involved to replaces that and fit a new clutch?

There we go then. I never read the thread and could explain why it's for sale again and why not for sale here.
As a guess a couple of grand at BMW easily if not more

Personally I don't think the guy is selling on for a profit, after spending good money on a detail, wheel refurb, tax and insurance loss, he would be lucky to break even....

Not that it really matters in the grand scale of things, but he could have detailed it himself, alloy refurb is ~£250, tax is direct debit and you get it refunded anyway, same with insurance.
