Interested in a car

Hi all

I've spotted a car I'm interested in and I've been in touch with the current owner to get some details on the cars condition and history and there are a few issues I'm not sure how much of a problem they are.

First is he only has the one key not all 3 (2 main + 1 valet). How much of a problem is this? Can I get replacements from BMW and what sort of price would that be?

Second is the near side and off side front bushes were advisories on the last MOT. Is this expensive to have fixed? Or is it a possible easy DIY job?

Rear brake pads are also wearing thin which I know is not a huge DIY job I might try and I don't expect a ridiculously expensive job to have done.

Cheers

Hi and welcome. Have you looked at the car in person yet? Is it close enough to you? Will give you a chance to give it a once over, see if any other issues you need to be aware of. Keys, I think you can get from dealer, not sure about cost.

Sorry can't help with other Qs, people will be along shortly.

Hi and welcome,
I have just purchased a new key for my Z4, £138 inc Vat, you will need the V5, Photo Identification and a Utility bill or something delivered to you r address with your name on it.
Took a day to get it.

Cheers guys.

The car is reasonably close, gonna arrange a look at it for Saturday. I can live with that price for the key, it might sound silly but I think my biggest concern about the one key is my own paranoia that the other key is out there. I'm seriously considering if I take the plunge having the docs sent to a friendly address then changing the address again to my own

Hi and Welcome,

Bushes are a common issue with all Zeds , so to do the front would be £200 quid , rear pads are 30-50 quid so with fitting another 40 so call it 80. Would not be deeply concerned about the keys, but yeah as other have said 134.

To be fair its a used car so any of the above issues should not be a concern, if the rest of the car is clean, good luck keep us posted

hello and welcome

maybe something and nothing, but i would be worried how someone could loose 2 keys

if i lost a key i would have to replace it just so i knew i always had a spare

The key situation would worry me. I don't think BMW can reprogramme the transponder either on these like the E90.

The other issue is BMW will only issue a limited number of keys to each vehicle so check with BMW before purchase as they may not provide any more keys.

Welcome!

I bought mine with 1 key (plus valet), and never had a problem. If I loose my main key, I can use the valet one, it just doesn't have buttons :(

I've actually been meaning to get the second key sorted. I've seen blanks on eBay and wondered if that's a cheaper way for a replacement.

Also, have a search on the forum for common issues and recommended spec....it will help you find the right one

You need the immobiliser chip and electronics (buttons), I think main dealer is only option to replace whole key.

Cheers srhutch. Coincidently, I've just been down to the dealer and ordered a new key. £134. Needed v5, driving license (inc paper part) and utility bill. Pick up Tuesday

This forum costs me a fortune! Keeps the car pristine though :)

Nicely done and welcome to the forum as a new owner. Make sure you also check the springs.

The worry for me would be that there are 2 keys somewhere that fit my new car.
