Intake or muffler?

Try googling M Style - they had them in the past. Closest fit for M54 3.0i is the one for an E46 330i - there's not an exact model that fits the Z4 perfectly. The intake is a tad short wheich means it'll draw some warmer air from the engine bay at low speeds - not an issue when you're travelling though.

Ally have you looked into the quality of the simota filter? I think I may buy one tomorrow, just not sure how it will affect my engine / intake, would you think they are better or worse quality then a k&n filter? Just don't want to hurt my afm sensor wire or it may end up being an expensive mod.

Finding a suitable exhaust option is proving a bit difficult

Sorry but I haven't gone as far as looking into that sort of thing so far. There's no much in terms of user reviews online for the Simota filters, but what I have read has always been positive. Not sure how much to read into the reviews though... It's going to take a bit of a leap of faith I think!

Out of interest, I just thought I'd share this page which I came across on Shipkiller's site this morning: http://68.230.199.37:8080/AirFilters.html

To me This confirms the fact that if I were to go for a cold air intake I'd spend a lot of effort researching a non-oiled filter that is as close to stock specs as possible, but rather in a conical shape for maximum surface area.

ok from reading a few reviews/ other forums it seems that a few poeple have had issues with the simota kit. and the only brand out there that gets consistently good reviews is the K&N. from what i have read the GruppeM intake uses a k&n filter as well. and i was so close to buying the simota.

However if i get the k&n i want some kind of heat shield, to reduce the heat soak from the engine. anyone know of a simple heat shield for the Z4? or will that be another custum DIY job

After speaking to my mechanic today i decided to buy this http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230540427983#ht_2075wt_768

he is running one in his car (its not a bmw) and you can hear the induction noise with it in the standard air box. so for the price I figured its worth a try. plus he showed my the piping in his intake and it looked nice and clean (no visible dirt/ oil)

will add a pic/review when it arrives.

I'm surprised that it would make that much of a difference when the rest of the intake contains all of the resonators and parts to reduce noise. Will be interesting to hear how it turns out for you!
