Insurance

Hi, it's something that none of us wish to ever use, but when it does we want to be looked after with the least amount of stress! So has anyone had first had experience of a decent insurance company that put things right when they go wrong?

I think most people these days just go for the cheapest quote...but that could be false economy! esure come in the cheapest at £278, BMW's own insurance around £500 with a few options on the cover.

Thanks

We had a 911 and it was insured via Liverpool Victoria, someone hit it in a car park- no issues.

Great car , sold it after getting band from driving - too many points !!!!

£278 is very low, but my experience of esure was sh*t customer service once you bought the policy.

Admiral have been ok but you need to get any mods on the policy from the outset or it's a £25 fee every time you change something on the car.

I was considering looking at one of the specialist firms like Chris Knott or Swinton come my renewal. Sorry no experience of BMW insurance.

My wife has a Smart Fortwo convertible. Someone reversed into it in a car park when she had the boot open. It buckled the boot hinge and Admiral sent it to their 'approved' repairer who were supposed to use Mercedes parts. They pulled the hinge out and rather than use the pin it did have to hold it to the boot they used a big self tapping screw !

Admiral also said it was 'non fault' (as my wife wasn't even in the car at the time) yet then refused to insure an extra car for me (a Smart Fortwo diesel at 16.4 to 62 and all of 54bhp) with her on the policy as she was a risk due to the non fault 'non' claim. I pointed out how insulting and stupid that sounded and they eventually relented. (Both wife and I have full NCB and are not young I should add).

As a result of this experience I will be going elsewhere no matter what the cost for our 3 cars !

Cheers all, always handy to hear how people have been treated.

Since making this thread I saw that they get good reviews so I just tried a quote with them, got this message right at the end: Sorry, we can't insure you for the following reason:
Your car doesn't have a tracker.

So I went back and added the tracker: With the Extras- Motor legal assistance £24.90 & Guaranteed courtesy car £19.90 it came in at £422

But there's a big warning at the bottom of the quote "Important - your security requirements
We require an alarm, immobiliser and tracker to be fitted and activated when your car is left unattended. We won't cover you for theft unless this security is fitted
."

Admiral can drop their 'admin' charge, you just have to be stubborn enough to see it through.

Admiral were great with me. Cheapest on Audi A6 S-line.

The car was involved in a flood. They asked me over the phone where the water level was upto (half way up steering wheel), said it would be a write off and paid me the full value via bank transfer the same day without an assessor casting an eye over it! I had a courtesy car (new insignia) by 10am the next morning dropped off at my door, and the Audi was collected the following day with no questions asked. Faultless really.

I'm with Admiral and was with them when some old boy took the side of my E88 off, it was recovered and sent to a garage of my choice who did a better job of the car paint wise than BMW did from the factory. Had no hassle what so ever and they gave me a great price for my E89 renewal even at 29

If they paid you the same day why would they provide you with a courtesy car?

Sorry I should have explained, I live in Newcastle but was contracting in Glasgow. I explained that I would not be able to physically get a replacement car in time for returning to work and needed to transport tools etc. They gave me the insignia for 3 days. I ended up buying my replacement car from Fyfe after work one day, and the courtesy car was even picked up from Glasgow Airport where I was working.

I had been with Admiral up until I got the Zed simply because of the cost. Admiral were great but surprisingly Aviva were cheaper.

So far so good and the good thing about Aviva is that you can manage your policy online i.e. make changes and there's no charge. I've added modifications, drivers etc to the policy and it calculates and prices differences without an admin fee. Any changes I have made haven't actually increased the policy either

As for customer service with insurance companies... the likelihood is that they are all pretty crap. Some people will say they have had good experiences but a lot more will moan and say its terrible. I would just stick to the more well known names and avoid these new and cheaper "internet" based companies.

After being with LV for three years I left them when I got the Zed due to the tracker issue. Not only is the annual tracker subscription another form of insurance cost, I watched a programme on tv recently showing that organised tea leafs, the sort who take 'prestige' cars, have the means to detect and disarm the sender unit. :o

Admiral multi car - cheap and good response to any issues. My daughter had a minor bump in her car - hire car on the driveway that day and fixed within a week (minor offside wing damage)

Tracker as in tracker.co.uk ... the 'original' one if you like ... does work as I have found many things with it and on one occasion along with the stolen roadside generator the tracker was on there were 3 stolen caravans and a stolen car (all on the caravan site the tracker led us to).

They can't be disarmed as such electronically but can be blocked. Tracker uses 2 ways of sending the signal as opposed to just one. They use radio waves and mobile phone type signals. This means the thief has to use 2 units to block it until they find it. This makes it far more effective than other manufacturers trackers that seem to only use the GSM/mobile signal stuff.

The issue is that most fitters on say, an X5, will only use 3 or 4 places to hide the unit. The thieves, if they are going for a particular type of car, know roughly where the unit will be and rip the trim out to find it. They know what they are looking for and once found it can then be disabled easily.

They often leave a car about 1/4 - 1 mile away from where they stole it and see if it has been recovered in a couple of days. If not recovered they will realise it hasn't got tracker and then take it on to where they want.

I have had Tracker.co.uk's trackers on about 6 cars but cba any more as if stolen I don't want it back and certainly don't want it back with trim ripped out.

I don't think Z4's get stolen much so it is not a real issue. A 3 or 5 series or especially an X5 or X6 is a totally different matter.

Cheers all, some good information there.

I like the sound of that, looking to get a private plate soon after getting the Zed so that will be handy :)

Tracker as in tracker.co.uk
Daft question!?!?! But when you sell the car do you just leave the tracker on the car or get it moved to the next one? I can imagine it would be a bit of a pain to take the car to them, have it removed, then go back with the new one and have it fitted again!

The Tracker (from tracker uk at any rate) stays with the car. They won't come and take it out - or at least they never would on my cars. It is supposed to be a positive selling point, though I have never known anyone get that excited about it.

and the new owner can take out a subscription with that existing tracker unit!

Yes, as I have done before - on my Z4M R :) Having the unit already fitted appealed to me but I guess won't to most people. I only found out after I had bought the car which was a result as I was going to have one fitted.

SO8: What made you go from a Z4MR to a E89? (just out of curiousity)

The horrible gearbox in the Z4M ... I had an E92 330d in between. I loved the Z4M but hated the notchy gearbox which ruined the car for me with it's wonderful engine.
