Insurance

Always insured my 2005 2.5 SE with Adrian Flux. Insurance always goes up up £20 or so pounds each year. Not enough to get me to check elsewhere and still only £220. But in an idle moment decided to do a bit of checking and couldnt believe that with 4 years NCB and a recent non fault accident in my day car got quoted £138 with Grove & Dean and that included legal and breakdown cover. Limited to 3000 miles a year (2000 with Adrian Flux). They wanted me to send pic of odometer to confirm mileage and pic of car in garage. All done and documents received today and to my surprise exactly the same Lloyds insurance company.
It really does pay to shop around.

I can only say I'm green with envy. My insurance was over £1,300, and that was by far the cheapest quote. They really know how to fleece young people (usually those with the least money)

Nothing new, I remember paying £350 for my insurance, when I started driving back in the early 80's. My Escort cost me £300 to buy

Going to check those out when my insurance is due next month for certain as that seems a pretty good deal.

I always make a point of using the well known comparison sites before my renewal, Confused and Copare the Market, quite often you will find your current insurer will come up on these sites considerably cheaper than your renewal, have cancelled the renewal and taken out the cheaper quote with the same insurer using the comparison site. Phoned the insurer and told them thats what I was doing, they didn't bat an eyelid. You also get the rewards offered by the comparison sites if you take one of the policies out, 2 for 1 cinema and food discounts.

I also use Quidco or TopCashBack to go to the comparison sites like confused etc and earn usually £30+ Sometimes as high as £70 (Aviva at times)

The only time I think that doesn’t work is if you renew with your own company as I think there’s something in the T&C’s saying that cashback is only payable to new customers to the insurers.

Likewise, I bought my 2.5 Z4 when I was 20 and paid £2300.00 with a £750.00 voluntary excess and 3 years no claims - the cheapest quote I could find by some margin  !

Was pleasantly surprised last month when my renewal quote was £350 (same it's been since I bought the car, but in fairness there was one claim in that time) but I managed to shop around and get it down to £170! That's with one of the big-name insurers too.

Must be getting old (36).

Must admit that £138 price was through Go Compare but wasnt the cheapest. Always avoid the very cheapest ones and although I purchased Grove and Dean on line, they had to speak to me to verify I was a genuine purchaser and then somehow gave it to me £10 cheaper than on the Go Compare site. All seemed very efficient including acknowledging pics of car in garage. I then got an email from GoCompare saying that as I purchased insurance via them my excess in the event of any claim is covered by them.
Grove and Dean are of course brokers (I think) as Certificate says 'Markerstudy' but it is an identical certificate to the one I receive through Adrian Flux who were going to charge £80 more.
I am of course at an age when motoring is more behind me than in front and I would have though premiums would be creeping up and that my accident in the day car would count against me.
If your insurance is coming up I would make sure you shop around as I have been reading the premiums should be going down due to Covid restrictions etc.

We have just 2 years ncb on the Zed, due to having 10 plus years on the other 2 cars in the house. We had to start at zero when we got it 2 years ago, how time flies. We are both in the old farts age group. I went online comparisoning and can get a policy for the car for £140 , but they will only pay out to the value of £6k. They also wanted £850 excess , but to ncb at a guess. This was with Quote Me Happy, which is a little ironic............Similar ones with increasing policy prices were also there, but the excess were all about the same.
I had a renewal call from A Plan, who are 200 yrds from my house. Same policy as last year and same price at £200 . This is with a £100 excess. 3k miles on a classic policy.
Going to these 'so called' specialist insurance companies ( including ones advertising here) amounted to around £300 P/A and nothing more to benefit from using them. I tried about 4 off them and gave up. Some even dont like you fitting csl rep wheels with the same size tyres as standard, so beware of suspension or parts changes if you are considering these insurance people.
We dont live in a rubbish postcode, have issues with age or claims.
So, yesterday, I walked into A Plan and paid my money to them.

I got my renewal through last month for my 330i daily about £10 dearer than last year, but I got a cheaper quote from Saga.

It must be where I live, because my cheap quote for 5,000 miles a year was still £241 with full NCD.

Just hoping I can get a better saving when my Z4 renewal is due next month!

We tend to compare premiums but I suppose the only real way is to see how they perform is if a claim is made.

Very true, but that's the bit we hope we'll never need to use!

My nephew had an underwhelming experience with Admiral a few years ago, but my niece did really well with Direct Line 18 months ago.

Hastings took 3 months to change a windscreen in my car and the wife knew the whole company virtually by first names................ never again will I give them money :headbang:

The 1880's must have been a wondeful time for motoring. Did things change for the better at the turn of the century for you then Fred? How much did you pay in 1901?
