Insurance - Trackers

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you have trackers fitted to your car and if so, does it actually make a difference to your insurance quote?

I'm currently getting raped on insurance on my zed (mainly because im 22, have 3 points and zero no claims bonus). I'm getting charged just short of £1800 for third party fire and theft. Im trying to think of ways to reduce my premium and I thought that fitting a tracker would help, but it seems to make absolutely no difference to my premium - I thought that would reduce it by quite a bit!

Are there any particular trackers out there that will help reduce my insurance quote or do you have any ideas on how I can lower the cost? It's going to be up for renewal in a couple of months :(

£1800 doesn't sound all to bad - I'm 33, have 1 year no claim, no points 2 years license and pay £1400  . I could have got the one with excess of £3000 for about £700 but that seemed alot of excess. The next cheapest I can find was £4000!

Ok, I do live in liverpool but still.....

my brother was in a similar situation to you, but he bought a 3ltr twin turbo supra.

his insurance was throught the roodf but by messing with some of the info you put in....... playing with your job discription (not being dishonest but making one of the variations on the drop down), where you were parked, garage is more than drive for some reason. he managed to knock a few hundred off his total.

worth a try

Tracker doesn't help with premiums that much. I have it on some cars but won't say on forum which.

I've just been through the complete excercise with my daughter on a Ka and the real reducers for premium were: Reducing the mileage, increasing the excess, removing legal cover, breakdown cover Protected NCB (of which as a 17 year old she has none anyway) Of course garaging, postcode, etc. help

We came down from £1,330 to £800 by making those adjustments

Depends what type of tracker you are talking about, with a security tracker probably wont see any difference, with most insurance companies they dont worry about them unless you had a ///M then you would have to.

With regard to Norwich Union who put a tracker in to see when you are using the car and where you go and how fast etc, then you maybe able to reduce your premium, but this normally limits yo as to when you can drive IIRC.

With regard to the garrage I have also heard this can insrease the premium as there is a fire risk, probably more risks leaving it on the driveway but there you go. I think member JDMc bought this to my attention at a meet.

was excess the main thing that reduced it so much because others usually just reduce it by £50 tops. the only other major factor i find is postcode, but i'm guessing you haven't moved house to reduce it. :)

also, out of interest (and if you don't mind me asking), what would be the difference if you told us which one of your cars did have a tracker?

so that people reading it don’t know which ones have and which ones have not, so if they know where they live and want to steal one, for instance the zed then they might know it hasn’t got a tracker. A thief reading the forum would therefore have to assume that they all have them??

You have to think why the premium is high - if due to theft risk, then a tracker will help. If it's due to a driver, then it'll do sod all. Common sense - not that insurance always follows it though!

sub 8k miles a year helps, if your young/low ncb/powerful car your best of trying brokers, the main insurance companies are useless although sometimes one will shock you with a decent quote. saying that i know here in shropshire my premiums are 50% than where i used to live in didsbury, manchester.

trackers dont reduce insurance, its usually the companys demand you have one on desirable cars before they will insure you.

Havn't BMW fitted tracker on all UK cars since about 2002 and it's up to the owner to get it activated either with a yearly subscription or a one off payment depending on the level of cover required.
That said it's a bit like alarms on motorbikes, it can be difficult to get insurance if you don't have an alarm fitted, so you spend £3-400 on an alarm to get £50 off at best, rip off merchants the lot them.
As a side note I think I paid less then £300 Fully Comp last year, but i'm an old fart with full no claims these days.

Don't know about the mileage/speed/time big brother trackers.

I have tracker on all cars - had no choice as the insurance companies refused or tried silly prices without them.

Rather not have them as if the car goes, I don't want to see it again (oh - and I have shortfall insurance so a day before 3 years old would be great) ...

Im 21 and pay £1300 for the Z and pay £1400 for the L200, Best thing i have found for getting the quote down is add two older women to the policy as driver 2 and driver 3! saved me over £1200 on the 2!

I've had a similar problem with insurance - I'm 23 and have the 3.0. £1950 fully comp through Adrian Flux (the policy is actually with RSA).
The things that I found really made a difference were named drivers and the excess. Adding your mum to the policy usually makes a big difference - but...as you can see with what I'm paying, no matter what you change, you will stay pay through the nose if you're under 25!

yup, was going to say that the only thing a tracker will do is reduce the theft element of the premium and if you live in a 'good' area that will be minimal.

Main limiting factor is age. so why am i saying this as someone else has.........

I'll go have another beer and think about it

I've a tracker on mine but it didn't lower the insurance, I think they wouldn't insure unless it was fitted. Wouldn't want it back if it got stolen anyway so the tracker is not for our benefit just the insurers :(

Thanks for all the advice. I've 'tweaked' a few numbers on the quotes now, like my annual mileage, excess etc. I'm now getting fully comp quotes for just under 1800 which is good. Next time I see my parents maybe il have to ask if they want to be added as drivers! (they live 98 miles away from me though!)

One thought (this probably depends on the insurer, but here goes) - if I have someone else included on my policy (let's say my dad for example), and I was to crash the car, would it affect his ncb?

privilige would insure my ///mc but not for theft without a tracker fitted :o

this is commons, as many including me have said security trackers have little if no effect on insurance costs, but most companies wont insure ///M's without one.
