This happened in Feb this year but it's still bugging me, unfortunately I hit a dog on the way to work early one morning, I was doing just over 50, I was driving a merc e350 sport, no airbags went off, no broken headlight, etc etc, anyone want hazard a guess at the repair cost incl vat ?? Btw it was a Labrador and very sadly it died.

You're talking insurance so vastly inflated costs. What was the actual damage to the car?

As an example, my S-Max was damaged in a car park. The same body shop provided pricing nearly 2K different depending upon whether it was an insurance claim or personal payment. £395 paid to pull a dent, replace some trim, paint the damage and blend it into the main car. If it was insurance, they would have replaced the door, all the mechanisms (if they could get away with it) and resprayed the side of the car.

Quite frankly, you can see where our premiums are going. Although it's a pain in the arse, I think we should go back to getting quotes for repair work then get the insurance company of the "at fault" driver to pay. I bet the annual payments to repairers would go down by hundreds of millions... :headbang:

Just to make it clear, the plastic inner wheel arch was hanging down otherwise i would have drove it home but there were warning lights on the dash saying take to dealer or whatever they say, there was no hire car charges.....i'll post the cost up later along with the rest of the astonishing story :headbang:

The total cost including vat was an astonishing £8760.00 :o :o

They replaced, with authorisation from the insurance assessor, every seatbelt ??? Every sensor, a tyre (never ran over anything), bonnet strut, bumper, headlight, front wiring loom, radiator etc etc there were four pages of parts!!!

I asked the insurance company for an explanation and they said the parts were needed, so I asked why the seatbelts, they said they were needed, but they weren't even connected at the time of the accident. One of the comments made was "well it is a Mercedes"

I know I'll pay with insurance premium hike next year, but how much time do I waste trying to save them money?

Insurance jobs are always inflated. Sad fact of life, and as mentioned, explains so many CAT D cars.

I would take a Cat D in the knowledge that for most, the damage won't have been severe...
