Insurance renewal joke

I'm with Diamond and my renewal was last month. They sent me a letter to say that my renewal would be nearly £1500 (same as last time!) and unless I cancelled the policy etc. then it would come straight out of my bank at the end of the month without me having to do anything. Apparently this is for the easiest, so they tell you. I wasn't happy with that as it wasn't any cheaper, so I got a quite as a new customer and it came out at about £1200. So I phoned Diamond and said I wanted it for what I had been quoted as a new customer. So I paid £1200! Just goes to show that if you are lazy and don't bother to look then they will rip their existing customers off just to get more money.

Managed to get in out out unscathed. But then again, I did escape during the England match on saturday so all the hooligans were in front of the TV.

Hmmm, my renewal came in at £355 (£20 more than last year despite no changes to police except me building up another year's NCB - now at 8 years).

Called to advise them I'd passed my IAM test = £12.10 reduction :)

Also informed them of my wife's SP30 (3 points / £60 fine for 51mph in 40mph limit) = £34.15 increase :(

So revised renewal of £377. That's really not fair :x

Not renewed yet although they are still the best quote I can find, but I've yet to try the IAM insurance scheme who claim to be cheaper for 90% of their members (I just know I'll fall under that 10% though ).

I hate car insurers...

exactly, i even have auto to make things easy, i am considering painting the peddles red and green just incase i forget

now you are IAM,

Try IAM Select
Or IAM Surety

I'm going to try them before I renew, nothing to lose. Haven't got time right now to call them though.

how much is it to become an IAM member, i assume you need to take a test etc
all details on their website: IAM

You buy a 'Skill For Life' package at the quite staggering £139. You're then assigned (or you pick) a local group who train you up using observers (of which I am one), then yes you take a test :D

You can also do RoSPA course which are similar but cost less but also have to retest every three years, where the IAM you don't.

showing my age now, it used to be IAM Select before they rebranded it IAM Surety...

I did pass the IAM test when I was 19 back in 1994 :o

ouch, £139 is a lot of money, i only want to save money on my insurance
yes I know :(

it is hitting our group recruitment quite hard, but it is the bods at HQ that determine the price :(

you can go to your local group independently and get a driving assessment free of charge though :D

Yep, it's a shame the Skills For Life package is now £139. My wife bought me mine for my birthday at the old cost (£99). It's steep but IMO it's worth every penny, not for any insurance savings but just as another tool to make my driving safer and more fun.

And the good news: IAM Surety came good . Just waiting on email confirmation to set it all up, but they agreed to beat my original renewal quote from my current insurer, not just my revised renewal including my wife's 3-points. Slightly lower excess too (by £10), cheaper windscreen excess, and over £30 cheaper than renewal. That's paid for my IAM membership this year :)

I would echo that - worth every penny especially considering that the training you get from your local group is free. Just remember that all the observers that take you out do so voluntarily without a penny etc. Some of the people we get give us a truly scaring first few rides :o

May look into this one as well at some stage.

Have a session booked with a police driver to improve my standard. Learned quite a bit of UK road rules the first time around (e.g. you can overtake over those hashed lines as long as your side is not solid - never knew that).

Obviously, having been trained in NL for my license (to a much higher standard :poke: ), there are differences with UK driving. Driving on the wrong side of the road is something that I will never get used to and being right handed, the gear lever on the left remains weird.
