Insurance renewal... change of insurer question

Haven't posted for a while - things are all a bit hectic at the moment... albeit not all in a bad way. As ever the zed is proving a pleasant distraction each time I get in still :driving:

Anyway car insurance is due next week and I'm happy to say that I've just renewed as a 26yr old male for... £337 with minimal excess and full couresy car/ legal cover etc. which I'm rather happy with!

I've changed insurer for the first time in a few years, and I've had a letter from the expiring insurer asking me to send my certificate of motor insurance so they can cancel the policy...

Am I missing something? Is this how it works? Surely they don't need me to send them a piece of paper I printed off their website myself (and could print again) to cancel my policy... it seems a bit of a dated/ pointless process???

Did you tell your previous insurer not to auto-renew?

If not, they've probably already printed/compiled a cover note for you - it might have been in with your renewal letter - and his is ht they want back to prove you're not using it to imply you're insured when you're not.

The current 'continuous insurance' legislation means you can be fined if your car is taxed, MOT'd but not insured - even if you have no intention of using it on the road. You have to inform DVLA that you're taking he car off the old (and do so) to avoid this.

Thanks for reply.

Seems you hit the nail on the head... the confusion was because they never sent me the new certificate (I cancelled well in advance). Spoke to them this morning and apparently as I get my documents online anyway the letter was sent in error and I can ignore it :headbang:

This wouldn't have been Adrian Flux would it? I had a similar conversation when I cancelled with them. No ill feeling, it was just bizarre.
