Just thought I'd share this in case anyone is feeling lazy about shopping around for car insurance

Have been with the same insurer for 5 years. I have had absolutely no change in circumstances, but they have just sent me a renewal notice for 43% more than last year.

Including insurance, breakdown cover, and legal protection, they are asking for £932. I am 37 with 6 years no claims and not a criminal.

I phoned them up, reminded them that I had been a customer for 5 years and asked if the increase was correct, and/or reasonable in their opinion. The response was pretty much like it or lump it.

5 minutes later on a price comparison website I have the same covers for £548. So ..er..I don't give away an extra £384 for nothing.

Bonkers.

I should add, that suddenly this year my exisiting insurer had the audacity to tell me that my insurance (at the new bonkers rate) would 'automatically renew' !!!...after I specifically had it changed to manual renewal 3 years ago

I also received a stupid insurance quote this year.. i think its the same all around... luckily i have until Christmas to work out what to do with it... Holiday or car insurance.. its a tough call!

You are right, ..I can get a nice city break somewhere like Barcelona for the money I am saving by changing insurer.

Direct line just tried to add a third to my cost- even tho if I was a new customer I could get my orginal price! Bye bye direct line me thinks!

Well...I wasn't going to name names,..but you just did it for me !

They get excited about not being on price comparison sites,..but perhaps they ought to at least log on once in a while and see how crap their quotes have become.

It was on watch dog the other night they are all at it- simple sod loyality and swap every year!

Maybe they still make a profit because so many people will blindly renew.

For me though,..I don't care what Direct Line offer me in the future, they can stick it, they have a lost a customer for life.

(taking my ball home)

I agree with Taz, i change every year and i guarantee you will always find a better deal than the one quoted by your current insurer. They just don't care any more.

I would agree but DL have always given me the best quote until this year. It doesnt make any sense at all to suddenly whack me with 40% more,...given the fact thay other insurers seem to be able to provide a normal quote. The automatic renewal bit has really added insult to injury too.

And there was I thinking we could have a nice verbal battle here. Very disappointing.

Just in the country of proper insurance at the moment, so I am driving anyones car at the moment without problems and no cost to me whilst I am here :P

where are you?

Presumably the scam is that they offer a cut-down price to get new business and then hike it up the next year and hope people cough up. I too have just "saved" £270 by not renewing at the laughable rate I was offered
.

Yup my renewal with Diamond came through at over £200 more than if I was a new customer. So they honoured the quote I got as a new customer as it was still the best for me.

I have heard that all insurance companies are putting their prices up due to the bad winter we had end of last year and the beginning of this year causing lots of insurance claims.
Don't forget though when changing insurance companies to let them know about run-flats if you have them.

I did some insurance quotes last night, just to get any idea of how "ridiculas" a Z4M would be for me....

I got two speeding fines recently (7 minutes apart...) so now have 6 points after 10 years of driving :headbang: these appear to add 10-20% onto any quote, not too bad...

I was suprised to get quotes of £1250 for an M, compared to £1200 for a regular 3.0 worth half as much, both had stupid £3000 compulsory excess though :|
I decided to run a few boring cars through the quotes system, a cheap original shape 2 litre Ford Focus is still £800 for me (but with sensible-ish excess) A Jag S-type v6, which I do have the possibility of buying from my father, is still over £1000, on a car worth £3k.

This is all with 6000 miles a year, 5 years no claims, secured car park parking at night and I'm 28. It seems all quotes are a bit stupid at the moment.
I'm paying considerably less than all of those quotes for a 4.4 v8 engined 8 series  maybe I should stick to things that qualify for classic insurance.

My thoughts lean towards, if I'm paying nigh on £1k for insurance why the hell not go all out and get a Z4M

I'll have to see how things pan out at work in the next couple of months but the thought has been put in my mind now...
