Insurance.. How honest are you?

So you speak to person "a" who says - no charge, no need to report, but when you claim and you speak to person "b" it might suddenly be an issue.

When dealing with Admiral, they told me for my daughter who is the main driver on the Polo from insurance point of view, that when passing her test, they would not increase the premium (person "a").

When I informed them of the passing, person "b" said it would be a couple of hundred. When I complained, they were going to pull the recording and check it, but a week later they could not find the recording (coincident or rule ???). As it was not available, they did a deal but still - this could be a real issue if it was relating to something else like a mod declaration.

After reading this thread - decided to give my insurance company a call, and listed out everything I have done to my car, the guy on the phone was like wow, this list is long. but it didn't add anything to my premium, and if the parts are damaged / in crash the insurance company said they will replace with identical modified parts 8) even strut brace was fine, and face-lift headlights were included.

Although when I asked about quad exhaust, they said it would be a $130 p/a increase

But overall I am happy now and feel safe if I ever had to make a claim :)

Hotride who do you insure with? they sound like the type of guys i would to spend my next £700 next year!

Good luck with that :poke:

As a matter of interest does anybody have any firsthand knowledge of a claim being rejected because mod's were not declared? I've never heard of it actually happening.

I'm wondering if it's a scare tactic to get people to declare and then up the premium. I can't see how they could refuse to pay after an accident because you had inconsequential mod, those that make the car unroadworthy or alter the performance would obviously be different.

My son had never declared mods until he was involved in a claim and had no trouble when he mentioned that he had not declared, They just allowed him to pay the difference and settled up

its all stupid i think, theres a fella on here with admiral too and they didnt charge him anything for his wheels etc. Gannet who are u with? so if say you bought 19" BMW CSL wheels and put them on a Z ud have to mention it as they was no option for 19s? actually even if you put 18" CSL on ud have to mention it as they didnt come as an option at all :?
Im with Royal Sun Alliance through the IAM Surety scheme, who apparently dont 'like' mods, but when I pushed them on it, that's what I was told...

as long OEM parts no problem....

the only non-OEM thing I have on my car is the stubby, which I kept quiet about, for tenner Ill cover it myself :D

* why not ring up your insurance company as a potential customer, detailing a Z4 your looking to buy and the mods it carries? This may help in understanding what extra cost they may apply if you come clean

I did a similar thing using confused. com on my missus's newly purchased Z3. finding a price before and after fitting lowering springs and alloy wheels to see who would allow them and who would be the cheapest when we did come to fit them.
We used Elephant and duly signed up to the price without the mods as we had not done them at that time.
We got a letter a week later saying we had "forgotten to declare the mods identified" on the second quote on confused.com and they wanted another £70 for them.
When I phoned them to say they were not fitted, they said we would have to get a garage to check and confirm in writing. I told the Indian call centre worker to politely 'f' off as I would not pay for a garage to do this.

I 'eventually' got an apology from head office after many heated discussions later.
Beware!!

Mate i think youd still need to report every mod its just person "a" might say ok i want ££ of you and person "b" might say thats fine no extra charge. (maybe it goes in their pocket i dont know! :o ) but the problem is not mentioning mods and having an accident whether the mods wudv increased premium or not. they want to know everything about your car! they want to insure your car tot he best they can. Admiral said it would be an extra £70 to go from toledo to Z4, 4 days later i buy the Z and they want £170! i kicked off and they said sorry and knocked it down to £140. human error but i think cos of this swift might be getting my money next time!!

i think the learning factor here is every insurance company operate differnt schemes for mods free or not, but "strategically" declare all of them to get the best possible cover if the s**t hits the fan.

I think the non OEM wheels is the biggy, as far as the insurance company are concerned if your replace the OEM's, then they may become more desirable to thieves and hence the question in flux regarding locking wheel nuts. My insurance is due in beginning of March and will still have my standard OEM winter wheels on, come April I will be swapping them over for my non OEM wheels and will then notify them.

That said flux states that if the wheels are different form the manufacturers standard specification for your vehicle, standard specification for the E89 is 17 x 8.0, 17 x 8.5, 18 x 8, 18 x 8.5, 19 x 8 & 19 x 8.5 and for tyres 225/45/17, 255/40/17. 225/40/18, 255/35/18. 225/35/19 & 255/30/19. Thus my summer wheels are 18 x 8 & 225/40/18 however the offset is different at 45 against 29 & 40, however with spacers this brings it to 30.

i tried giving my dad my 108s with good tyres for free on his 320 tdi cos hes got wimpy 16s and he was so nervous about the insurance he said no to my offer!

108s on a 3 series - really ? How would that look ? :o

I think that particularly in the current financial climate, insurance companies (like all companies) are looking to reduce their costs. This means that if they weren't already, they are now looking for any excuse not to pay out in the event of a claim. Out of interest, the recent mods I've declared to my insurance company (swiftcover) haven't resulted in increased premiums, but they've confirmed they could have meant invalidated cover in the event of a claim.

Thus, by not declaring mods, it seems that you're putting yourself at huge risk.

my mate had a 1.5 civic full bodykit, fitted with a 2 ltr turbo which as far as the dvla and his insurance knew was a totaly stock car. he wrote the car off and no questions were asked. i dont tell my insurance anything unless its a preformance mod

i would only tell the insurance company of a mod that i would want to be replaced/repaired if the car was damaged

i would not consider a stubby to be a mod that needs to be notified

It doesn't really matter what you consider or I consider. It's what your insurance company thinks. I am staggered how many people are prepared to risk it.

i would have thought the insurance company would laugh if i informed them i had put a different aerial on it?

I agree so why not tell them and its sorted?

I wouldn't want the risk hanging over me, it would bother me
