Probably discussed to death everywhere else and here, but just thought I'd post my thoughts.
When I was looking for a replacement for a smart the main restriction was the insurance premiums. As a rough guide I just used to wing the reg numbers of cars i'd consider into confused.com and get a rough price.
I really REALLY wanted a mk6 golf R ever since it came out, but couldn't get insured for less than £13,000 (at 5000 miles a year, £1000 excess). That is for a 2.0 turbo engine at 256hp.
Always fancied the Z4 coupes but again, assumed being a 3.0 rwd coupe insurance companies would have an absolute field day with my premiums but how wrong I was. Having a quote of £1300 sounded pretty reasonable given my Smart was £975 after a multi-car discount with admiral (funny enough the cheapest quote was with admiral anyway)
Called them up today to transfer over my policy to a new car and they wanted an extra £600. After panicking for a bit I was transferred over to sales who gave me a price of £1450. Still didnt work for me as I was quoted much cheaper before. They asked for the quote number which I couldn't retrieve as the quote had expired so he said 'leave it with me' and came back with a figure if £1175.
I've never understood insurance companies and their logic (insuring a car as being parked in a garage overnight is more expensive than being left on a drive for example) but this for me seams to be a great deal. Excess is £750 (£250 of which is paid via GAP), covering 6000 miles a year. All in all, very happy!
