Insurance companies for a remapped 20i

So, think I've finally ended my search. Now I need to sort some insurance out.
For me the base car comes in at £220, but when I add in an engine remap my compare site (Quidco) jumps up to £330.

Anyone have any experience of good insurance companies that don't penalise a remap that much?

FYI I was planning on a Superchips remap for +81bhp & +75Nm for £280.
Thoughts on that would be welcome also.

I contacted Chris Knott insurance as recommended on here but they wanted to charge a 25% loading for the remap. I already use Direct Line for the Zed and my Yeti and DL didn't charge anything for the mods, but weirdly CN were cheaper on renewal for the Skoda 🤔
So give Direct Line a call

Hi Craigdm
If mings, direct line doesn’t come up trumps,
I’m with LV , got a 35i mapped and it cost me £12 on my insurance. Funny thing was , I declared id painted my calipers . They charged me £20 for that 😂
Let us know who gives you the best deal 👍

LV works for me..four cars all with declared mods..average increase £25..

Have to second this! I've been with Aviva for donkey's. When I went to add the Zedster to the policy a while back they actually had to be convinced to cover it! (Completely standard car). Eventually they condescended to cover it, with a huge excess but it was because "of the kind of car it is".

Then asked for the extra cost if I chipped it. OMG. Not on any online drop-down list, had to phone them. You'd think I was the Devil incarnate. Declined!

Went onto the LV website. Very straightforward, engine tuning options on a drop down list. £248.00. Then I removed the Z4 from the Aviva policy and got a £268.00 refund!

I couldn't find anyone who was willing to cover me for less than a four figure sum - ive had to leave mine stock 😢

They all load.. it seems on here people may get a better deal adding the map after already having insurance.. LV were also cheapest for me but still went from 170 to 243 once the map was declared.. i recently did quotes for mine on all 3 big comparison sites with and without the map and the top 5 quotes on each site loaded £70 on average

Here's the results so far...
Quidco Compare (My go-to comparison site) - £277 with £35 cash back (Nett £242) with Esure & Shiela's Wheels
Go Compare - £407
LV - £402
Knott - £279 in standard tune, didn't give me a price for the remap as it would have been more than Esure
DL - Declined to give a quote online for some reason (tried it twice).

Dunno why you had problems with DL, but everyone's circumstances are different.
We were with them last year and I didn't declare the remap as it was done part way through the policy. I wanted to find out how much they would load without asking them, and when people on here told of zero loading I told them of the remap on renewal. The quote was exactly the same as before I mentioned it.

You're a very brave man.

Maybe a strange question but, legalities aside.....how would an insurance company know if you didn't tell them?
Hypothetical situation, you buy a car which has been tuned but you don't know, what would happen then?
I assume not all tunes are additional 100hp.....

Experts?

There is a security module buried deep in the systems which flags up all changes..a qualified BMW systems person could use standard BMW tools to see that the ECU s/w was hacked..

Clearly for a minor shunt it’s not going to happen..in the case of death / serious injury claim then…

It’s routine in other countries to query the system after most accidents / incidents..

Exactly the above.

If it is discovered in the process of a claim, your insurance is invalid and Fraud may come into play.

Yeah, that was my thinking....

To put it simply: insurance assessors are not idiots. They are (believe it or not) aware that drivers will get their cars remapped, and in the case of a "sporty car", this is actually quite likely.

Scenario: multiple vehicle accident, deaths and/or serious injury. "Your" car will very likely be written-off.
Your insurance assessor: First, check if the car is insured with a remap declared. No? OK, once the car is in the pound, have an inspection done of the vehicle's ECU and ancillary electronics. The police will be involved at this stage because of their own accident investigation.

A "remap" is discovered. Owner is thus not insured, although the insurance company has to honour the third-party element. The police are informed that the owner is not insured. The insurance assessor then checks internet forums for that model of car. Perchance, this forum? Aha! There's a chap with the exact same model and colour proudly advertising his remap: "....... in my remapped 20i in Valencia Orange with Black Roof".

Need I continue? As I stated earlier, Ming is a very brave man.

You can make light of it, but the facts are you committed insurance fraud and were to all intents and purposes driving without insurance.

I believe the latest versions of Ista (dealer) software flags up if the car has been remapped immediately after the vehicle identification screen.

To be fair, I think just stupidity rather than criminal intent.

But the outcome would be the same.
