Just had a thought on this whilst looking at thread where Breaker suggests Bluestreak buy a Carbon Diffuser for his new coupe (congrats glad you found what you where looking for) .
Now assuming you have declared the the diffuser to your insurance company, what happens in the horrific event that someone rear ends you and smashes the diffuser, surely the insurance company have a contract to repair to the insured state. so are therefore obligated to replace the diffuser or would they just use insurance speak to get out of it.
Especially poignant as I'm almost on the verge of another attack of Z4-itis and feel Aero Skirts coming my way (just don't tell SWMBO) and have been told by a supplier that they too are also going the way of the Dodo.
But like I said just a thought as I guess this kind of parts availability or lack of happens all the time in classic car circles.

If it's a fault claim then you'll most likely not be covered, as most insurers will insure the car on the basis of getting it back to 'standard', not to the modified state. They will take a note of the modifications so that they won't refuse a claim when the assessor checks the car over, but will not usually cover the mods themselves.

However, if the 3rd party is at fault, then you should be able to recover the costs for the modifications - assuming they've been declared - but it might simply mean they'll right your car off instead due to the cost of the modifications over standard car.

If you need to cover the value of the mods too, then you'll need a specialist insurer such as Adrian Fux.

Thanks mmm-five, I guess where I was coming from was more on the lack of availability of parts to repair back to the insured standard, quite scary the thought they'll possibly write a Zed off because you can no longer get the Carbon Rear Diffuser or Aero Skirts, but then as you say they would more than likely just repair back to OEM spec.

I think this is why so many insurers will not touch modified cars. Solves many an issue before they arise.

I remember CIS insurance used to cover any modification as long as it was not performance enhancing. However, if you claimed they would only repair back to standard.
