Insurance advice needed

Hoping someone can give me advice regarding my travel Insurance, me and my girlfriend booked a holiday to Cape Verde at the end of July, at beginning of sept her mum was diagnosed with cancer and given 6 months. On Friday we found out it is worse than first thought and has now been given couple of weeks, we were due to fly 3 days after that (today). So on Friday we cancelled the holiday. Today I phoned my travel insurance which I get through my bank and they told me I won't be able to claim any money back because her mum isn't my direct family and girlfriend can't be classed as my partner because we don't live together. After a lot of ranting down the phone I didn't get anywhere, hoping someone can come up with another idea. Really makes me wonder why we take out insurance.

I know the Money doesn't matter at all in the great scheme of things but its really got my back up

sorry i can't help at all, but it doesn't suprise me that they try and get out of it :headbang:

i hate insurance with a passion :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Sorry to hear your news. In most travel insurance docs I have seen (not many to be fair), it usually says something along the lines of "you or any member of your party" rather than you/partner when it comes to medical reasons for cancelling. It may be worth checking the exact wording. If its a 'free' policy that you get with your account, then I wouldn't be surprised if it is really restrictive - the 'freebies' are not usually very good or have large exception clauses.

Failing that, a letter to the MD of the insurance company / bank may be worth a try, but don't get your hopes up.

Can't your girlfriend claim on her insurance?
Her insurance states they will only pay for her.

I will read all the terms and conditions again and see what the exact wording is,

Thanks for all your advice
