Insurance Advice for Newbie

Hi. Tomorrow I will be getting my first Z4. It's not just my first Z4 it will be the first time I have owned a second car. I'm still getting my head round all this multi car, second car with no no claims stuff and would appreciate any advice.

The car I currently drive is a Vauxhall Vectra. I have 9 years NCB and my insurance premium is next to nothing. Obviously to insure the Zed without NCB it will be very costly so this is what I figure I should do.

I can contact my insurer and tell them I have bought the Zed and have my current policy changed to that car complete with the NCB. Then find a new insurer to cover the Vectra with no NCB. The Vectra isn't worth much it's just a commuter so it's bound to be cheaper to insure without NCB than the Zed.

Does that make sense or am I missing something.

My other option is to walk away from my current insurer and go with a multi car policy with Admiral or similar.

Thanks for any input.

Al

Try Classicline as they insure second cars at a reasonable price but the mileage may be restricted.

Same as me last year... keep an open mind some insurers will take into account your no claims. Admiral will do a multi car policy and add your current car when it falls due. try a few quotes on comparison web sites... I had 12 years + NCB on daily drive, zed ended up costing me £749.00, this year its down to £520.It seems every year you have to shop around to get the best deal...

I'm kind of wondering, am I doing anything wrong by changing my current policy to the Z4 to pass the NCB on to it even though I will still own the old Vectra and will be insuring that too. Just trying to get the best deal for myself without compromising honesty and legality.

It is your choice which car your NCB is attached to as u correctly say with a second car u start from zero.

If you're the only driver, then as some have mentioned some insurance companies recognise this & are accommodating. The NFU were a brilliant insurers for almost 20 years, though about 5 years ago they started to get a bit clever, slowly & surely I took the cars that were with them away until last year putting my Zed premium up to over £1k was the last straw... so now they have nothing but a lost customer that never cost them a penny.

It's now with AXA surprisingly with class 1 business use for £330.. as S&D with journey to work was more expensive.

Have fun

Some insurance companies allow you introductory no claims for a second car, or even if you are a named driver.

x2

They will record it for you though so you can still build no claims but has no effect on theirs prices.

Admiral gave me mirror ncd on second car through multi car insurance, BUT were way too expensive this year, but didn't care as had ncd on the zed by then. Also, try Sky insurance who will mirror ncd on second car.

Admiral Multi
I'm 26 (1NCB on own name 7years named driver) and girlfriend 25 (7NCB). I'm paying £550 on my 07 Zed 3.0si Coupe and g.f pays £250 on her 2006 Corsa CDTI. Being fully comp on each others cars and living together brought the price down.

The first quote from admiral was £1350 for both of us in each others cars. Got some single car quotes at £800 for both and admiral matched the quotes and give multi car discount (only when I asked her). £750 total.

Almost a Bargain!

Sky insurance (Tel 0333 321 8002) are a good crowd. Iv not got any NCB although I had evidence of no crashes or convictions with the fleet company our company uses for our company cars for last 11 years. they do deals for second cars etc. Also mention you are a memeber of a car club you get a 10% discount. I have my mate as a named driver on mine too and it didnt cost a penny. limited to 5000 miles but for a weekend car thats more than enough and they said if you want to extend it say near the renewel date it will cost you buttons to add a few thousand more miles on to it. Breakdown cover, courteous car.
