Instrument Lighting

Guys, I need you help as I'm new to this Z4 lark!

Driving along today my intrument lights (including radio display) appeared to flicker between being dimly and brightly illuminated. I know you can manually adjust the illumination manually but it also seems to be affected by some kind of sensor on the light switch controls.

Does this sound normal to you lot? I have auto headlights too so not sure if this makes a difference?

Yep, very strange. If you cover the little sensor thingy on the light control switch the dash illumination goes crackers. I guess it must try to detect the ambient light level in the cabin??

I had experiance about this flicking illumination on my old E46 323 cab. It did the exact same thing as you describe, but only when I drove from bright sunlight into for an example a dark tunnel or garage. Did yours just suddenly do this flicking or were there also a sudden change in the incomming daylight level?
I must say that I did not see this problem on my Z4 3.0i yet. Also I would expect Bimmer to make the change in contrast much more smooth.

lazerium is correct. There is a small sensor placed next to the lightcontrol siwtch that detects the incomming light level in the cabin and adjusts according to that.
