Instrument cluster went black 005E16

2005 3.0i e85, on daily commute noticed the instrument cluster (mileage etc display) went black, speedo worked ok. Returned to normal in a few seconds. ISTA/D read error code 005E16 ”ABS-DSC: CAN connection to instrument cluster”. Never read about this one, anyone else? Single occurrence and probably not leaving me stranded so nothing to worry about, methinks.

First thing I would check are the connections inside the instrument cluster are clean and fully connected, seems like your problem is a momentary loss of power/communication on the display. Not had a Z4 cluster out so can't advise on how to open it up to check things out.

I would also recommend removing a battery cable before doing this. Also, DO NOT move the car with the cluster disconnected. Once the cluster is out spray the male/female joints of the plug with Electrical Contact Cleaner. With luck, after cleaning the contacts, you'll be good to go.
