My 2006 Z4 has a challenging, intermittent malfunction with the instrument cluster (all gauges and dummy lights), the OBD and the roof controls do not function about half the time I start the car. Every other system functions correctly. Typically after running the car for about 10 seconds to 10 minutes all the dummy lights light up (all at once), the gauges, the roof controls and the OBD port all function again. It's like a system is rebooting, even sounds a tone. Every time the instrument cluster returns the tire pressure warning is activated (dummy lights) but all the tire pressures are normal. I can not produce the issue; sometimes everything works perfectly 10 starts in a row and other times the malfunction happens 6 times in a row. I have discovered, when the malfunction occurs if I de-energize the car (disconnect neg battery cable) for a moment, then reconnect the cable and re-energize the car the malfunction is resolved for the moment (until the next time it happens). Tried scanning for any fault codes?
Battery in good condition?
Makes me wonder if the ECU has an internal backup battery (anyone?)
Sounds a lot like what happens when internal batteries fail; PC motherboards etc.

I had an almost similar thing on my z4 a long time ago...if i try to start the car and gauges and lights are dead then it will not start. Sometimes I get lucky and it starts right up, car runs fine and great if it starts. I can drive it the whole day as long as I don't shut off the engine :roll: . Annoying right? It was my tell tale sign if the car would or would not start. Sometimes when driving the transmission indicator on the cluster would disappear. i scanned for codes and it says the cluster isn’t communicating with my ecu among others. Prior to that, i get codes randomly....thermostat codes, engine misfire codes etc. i had a bmw independent diagnose it and they found out that my ecu was dying. Had it replaced and never had any problems again.
