Installing retrofit subwoofers?

I got a 2003 2.5 with only the basic audio speakers, not the subwoofers behind the seats. And i found original BMW subwoofers for E85, and my question is, is my car prepared for subwoofers? Is it just plug in and play? :ninja:

OK, so it isnt prepared from factory? Waiting for someone to be sure! :P

You will definitely need the amp to power the subwoofers. Not sure if any wiring is already there though...

There was no pre-wiring in #69 when I pulled the cubbyhole out to reroute the iPod/Intravee wiring. That's probably a good thing though as it would route to where the Amp would be and be a pain. Better to fit the right wiring and route it where you want.

I see, thank you :driving:

As an FYI, if you pull they cubby hole mouldings out to investigate, be really careful as the clips are fragile. If they deform when it comes out they will break when you push them home. Clearly the previous owner of #69 had discovered this. Fortunately there were enough remaining for it to fit back in. Strong advice to use trim tools to remove it to avoid scratches. Or put masking tape/insulating tape on the end of a flat blade screwdriver.

Btw what is #69?

simple line out convertor if all you're adding is bass, a small amp mounted on the back wall and two oem subs wired in series (as they're 2 ohm I believe) so final impedance is 4 ohm.

would work and wouldn't break the bank.

I wouldn't mind a little more bass too, those standard speakers are poo

If you have oem subs, remove them, inside the metal box glue dynamat or similar stuff. It will make them sound much better

I dont have oem sub either, just poor front speakers :(

The mid level audio OEM "subs" are the same speakers as the kick panels. Marginally decent bass speakers, but not really subs. The top level audio OEM subs are true subs, but they are driven by an unusual voltage, you cannot drive them properly with an after market amp. You are infinitely better off fitting your own complete after market sub solution.

Marius - re: dynamat, good tip! (though slightly OT)

Simn - re: #69 & ex gf - see Stuart's sig for what #69 is/was
