Depends on what BMW system you have I think there are 3 different systems and the most costly system to change is the DSP which I have. I think I spent about £2K changing the head unit and only £200 was the cost of the head unit itself. I have thought about getting a single din with motorised screen that pops up or a single din with floating screen but tbh I don't think the car needs it.
I'm happy enough using my phone for sat nav duties. It would be easy enough for me to do now as well. it's a simple hea dunit swap now everything else has been done.
First thing to do is check behind your seats. Is there a hole behind them or a speaker grill?
If there is a hole then you are in luck it's a cheap job to swap out a head unit. if there is a grill where 2 of the 4 woofer locations are behind the seats then it's a very expensive job to change the head unit.
