Installation of PA12BMW iPod Adapter

I have a 2004 Z4 2.5. I bought the USSpec PA12BMW iPod adapter to use with my iPhone. I just got it installed today and it works well. There is a very helpful thread on this forum showing how to remove the center console in order to access the CD Change wires so that you can plug in the USSpec interface cable. I was surprised how much was involved in getting to this wire in the 04. It's behind the compartment for the center console, so you not only have to remove the center console, but you also have to remove the panels behind both seats in order to get the box out because (at least on mine) it has areas that go into the space behind those panels on either side. So, for anyone trying to do this, you need to look at the box in the compartment and see if yours has a recess area that goes back toward the speaker area. If so, be prepared to take off the rear panels on both sides behind the seats. All together the job took me just over 3 hours, but I took my time doing it.

welcome to the forum
I had mine fitted by my Dealer when I got the car and labour cost was substantial so even workshop time is significant

Here is a picture of what I had to remove to get to this wire. Not a minor job by any means.

My next step is to install the Spec.dock in the place where the ashtray is:

Does anyone know if you run into an issue with space if you try to put an iPhone into this dock? The space above the ashtray looks pretty limited.

I built my own specdock and my iPhone 4S fits nicely in there. There's still a bit of "wiggle" room - I can take photos at the weekend, if needed?

I'm considering doing the same using an inexpensive mini dock. Rip it apart and install it in the opening used by the ashtray. My concern is that the Speck dock seems to sit pretty high in the opening and it looks like it makes the iPhone tilt forward a bit to get it to fit. Another option I'm considering is the DICE DCR-50-PTH Cradle and avoid the issue of trying to use the Ashtray space at all, but reviews on Amazon for this cradle have not been kind.
