Inspection Questions...

Hi Guys,

I'm at 42,300 miles on the clock with a service due in approx 2,500 miles, looking at my servicing log the last service was an inspection 1 at 23,500....am I right in thinking that this will be a service 2, if so what sort of costs should I be budgeting for?

Secondly.....have I made a schoolboy error which will affect my FBMWSH or FSH for that matter...when it said oil change in my eagerness I had it done at an indy I trust and have been to for years but never got a stamp (didn't think I'd need this for SH purposes until recently reading the service booklet and wasn't a member of this forum at the time), will this hinder me when I eventually come to sell it?

Taking into consideration the above, age - Jan '04, my price of purchase 11k, spec - below and current Z market values, is it worth getting a service done at a BMW dealers or should I just plump for an independant....also taking into consderation that I'll probably sell up in the spring 2012 for a 330 "family car"...forward planning and all that! I'm doing roughly 8k miles per year so may just have hit/past the 50k milage barrier so may be lucky to get maybe 8k for it (just guessing).....what would you guys do?

Many Thanks

Surely if you had it serviced at a trusted Indy just take the book and get him to stamp it?? Most will even write or stamp 'serviced to dealer specification'. Missing stamp (unless you have the receipt for the work) will certainly break the service history.

If you've already had one service at an Indy why ask if you shoudl stick to BMW - you've already brokent he chain. That said I would not waste my money on main agent on a car worth so little (mine's older so not being derog.) The amount extra you pay will never be recouped in increased value.

I'm sure my Indy guys will retrospectively stamp it if that sort of thing goes on, they're very good...i'll just have to ask in the new year :)
At the time I was more focussed on driving my new toy than having it in the garage so didn't really think about the long term repercussions.....just got the oil changed, didn't cross my mind it would affect the service history....doh my bad! I suppose I was asking if I should still go to the dealers or not as i wasn't fully sure if I'd broken the chain, knowing I have i'll not bother now as you have a valid point on not recouping the money, I'm assuming an Indy dealer inspection will be cheaper...significantly so?

No offence taken either  we both still own a fabulous piece of kit regardless of how old our models are :D

Many Thanks

I think your next service with 42k on the clock is an oil service, just get that done at a dealer.I would get some quotes as it wont be much different to the price an indie charges.By doing it this way you will still have a BMW fsh.
The way the servicing goes is Oil service,Inspection 1 ,Oil service,Inspection 2 feel free to correct if i am incorrect, the reason for giving the info is this is the path mine is following.

How can you maintain a FBMSH if the last service was done at an Indy and the book not even stamped? If the book is stamped it will at best be a FSH.

The way I read it was 23k Inspection 1,I take it that was done at a BMW dealer, next service due is an Oil service.Who is to know that it has had an intermediate oil change other than the owner if the book was not stamped.

Maxman - sorry, but you're wrong:
Regardless of mileage based service schedule an oil change is needed every 2 years maximum. For a Jan '04 that means Jan '06, '08 and '10. Assuming that the 23k service takes care of one of them, then this Zed has 2 oil changes missing as a minimum. Even if the car is whizzed into a dealer tomorrow it's history is long since gone.

In addition it should also have brake fluid changes at the same 2 year intervals, which I'll guees have been missed too.

Very few Zeds actually have full service histories when you get into checking them as peopl believe in just the mileage based indicator and don't read the service book
