Inspection of rod bearings…

I’m just scouring Autotrader with a beer, passing a Sunday evening, and noticed a Z4MR that states…”separate inspection of both Vanos and rod bearings with no further work needed”.

Now call me a cynic, but going to the trouble of taking the sump off to check rod bearings, surely you would just spend the ~£100 for the bearings to swap them seeing as all the labour has been done? Or, is it a selling angle, to make someone comfortable?

Is it just me….?

No, not just you. Sounds like they’re either very tight, or are lying (or their garage charged for a check that never happened).

I get where you’re coming from, I had a similar thought when I was looking at an M3 a while back that claimed the bearings had been inspected but not replaced. Honestly, if you’re already in there, I’d just do them for peace of mind, it’s not a huge extra cost compared to the labour involved. Feels more like a line to reassure buyers than anything else, and I’d personally assume they haven’t been done and plan accordingly if I were seriously considering the car.

Like others I don't believe anyone would pay hundreds just to get them inspected and then not have them changed.

So I wouldn't take any comfort from that claim and would plan to get them replaced!

Glad it’s not just me then guys, I’m gonna say there’s no way someone has had anything done…

To inspect each bearing you would need to take them all out, and makes absolutely no sense then putting the old bearings back in…

Unless they're using arp bolts they'd need to replace the bolts anyway too, that's a fairly surefire way to confirm if they've actually taken it apart to inspect but christ it's like a 1200 bill to pull the caps off, why would you not spend the extra 120 on some replacement bearings when you're there?! Absolute insanity!

If anything, it points to an undeclared (although unlikely) reason why the bottom end was off!
