Inspection due

So to conform to have FULL BMW service history, do we need to take the car to BMW for each of these 2 year oil changes??

I'mreally confused... :cry:

Full would be:

Oil
Insp I
Oil
Insp II
Etc

Whatever you do in between, should not matter.

I supply my own oil to the dealer, so the change is about £75.

My dealer changed the oil at "oil change" and inspection 1 despite it having been only about 5 months! Love those guys. 8)

In the US we're on 1 year intervals on oil changes (wonder why that is, really).
 
I can see the service schedule turning to shite, and trying to explain to a prospective buyer why there is only 8k between a oil service and inspec 1 could be interesting.

Surely a full BMWSH is just a set of stamps in accordance with the service book. Therefore if an oil is called for every 2 years that woudl need to be done by BMW.

I'll bet 75% of so called FBMWSH are just a set of random dealer stamps in the service book. Frankly how would anyone know aside oil changes spaced and no more than 2 years if and when inspections shoudl have been done, unless the BMW system can pick it up from the key?
 
the thing I find confusing is the service indicator in the car....

assuming 15k per service interval...

when you buy the car it says 15k to OIL SERVICE
you then travel 15k and have the car serviced
car then says 15k to INSPECTION
you then travel 15k and now have the car serviced with INSPECTION 1
car then says 15k to OIL SERVICE
you then travel 15k and have the oil Service...
car then says 15k to INSPECTION...
so you travel 15k to INSPECTION II

No if you as the service book (not the car) says dont travel 15k in 2 years, you can get horribly out of sync... witness my car that now says about 12k (ish) to OIL SERVICE when then next 'scheduled' service is the INSPECTION II....

BMW will always reset the service indicator whether you are doing a mileage based or time based oil change...

They don't always reset the indicator--my dealer does NOT. At the first oil change (remember, 1 year here in the US) my service adviser said he wasn't going to reset as there were services due at "first" oil change he didn't want me to miss. Still, my time/mileage is all out of whack. After I had driven home, indicator to "second" oil change read 15500!!!!!!!!!
 
Smokin, they reset mine yesterday when I went for an oil change... still had 5K on the clock, but reached 2 year limit... so should they have not reset it??

I have the exact problem gannet has described.... I only do around 5k per year...
 
I just got a phone call from Snows in Ports as I emailed them to ask about whether I need an oil change (car is 2 years 9 months old) and has never had an oil change (still 2k to go on the indicator)...and they phoned to say that they would change the oil free of charge as I bought it from them when it was just over 2 years old!!!!! I just have to book it in!

Although :thumbsdown: :thumbsdown: to them not doing it at two years! (although I guess part of the blame should rest with the previous owner)
 
Dr Nick,surely they should've changed the oil as a matter of course before they sold it? Tut,tut Snows.Not surprised they are doing it for nowt for you.Lazy b*ggers.
 
Indeed bigshurv, they should have done. But I am still impressed with them, compared to the Southampton stealer they do seem to be good - its all relative after all!
 
With miles that low, I don't know. Mine's a daily driver, year-round. I think what my service adviser meant was there were things to be done at 15K that would be missed if he reset for an in-between oil change. The computer would assume they had been done. I don't know if resetting the computer changes time to inspection 1 or not. I think it does. The whole thing confuses the heck out of me. I just make sure to go in at least once a year for an oil change. :?
 
A little bit of advice if you can please...I'm looking at a September 2006 3.0 litre coupe now with 30k on the clock.

At four years old it had its first ever oil service (mileage of about 17k) done at the main dealer, since this is what its OBC stated.

There is no proof of an oil service being carried out after the first 2 years - clearly the first owner wasn't aware of the time based servicing.

This is of some concern due to any potential engine damage on running some of those initial 17k miles on oil >2 years old (let's assume half of those miles).

Since its first oil change at 17k the car has steamed through to 30k without issue (that's 13k miels in 6 months).

Should I be cautious about buying, or is it an insignificant hicup in the cars service history? :roll: .

I wouldn't buy a car that hadn't had an oil change in 4 years (worse case scenario if I understand what you're saying?) but that's not saying there's anything wrong with it. I just hate the idea of buying from an ignorant/carefree owner.
