Inspection 2

Hi all,

I have my Inspection 2 coming up for my Z4C. Im assuming the best way is to go for a BMW approved garage?
If so can anyone recommend a decent place who charge quite reasonably?
How much, roughly, would it cost?

I am in the West London area, but do not mind travelling a bit if it is worth it.

Look forward to your ideas.

Thank you.

I'll be arranging an Inspection 2 myself soon. Quite far from you, so probably not going to be any relevant Indy's, but I'm interested in what prices get quoted. My local main dealer wants £439 :o

Dealers prices are insane, especially considering the Insp2 on these cars is really nothing special or difficult.

We’ve got 10 year old cars so it would be insane to pay main dealer prices for servicing. I’d look for a BMW specialist near you instead, there must be a few in London or else head west to somewhere like TWG in Camberley.

£269 paid here for an inspection 2 on my 3.0i. I use a BMW specialist near Basildon, Essex, called Power Developments.

No way would I pay main dealer prices, it's simply not worth it. You're just paying for the free tea/coffee/magazines/WiFi and the BMW stamp.

If they were to price match however, then great!

Call up the following indies for a quote:

Munich Legends
Evolve
BMS Surrey

All have done work on my car to a high standard and I haven’t had any issues.

BMS Surrey are probably your cheapest bet but the only drawback is that they don’t offer courtesy cars.

If you use a main dealer expect to pay £400+, seeing as you live in West London, I’d recommend Berry Heathrow, HR Owen Park Royal or Park Lane Battersea. But again, you will pay more money for the same work.

I used PRBMW in hayes (an indie) for my inspection 2, Could not fault them, seemed very thorough, modern clean workshop, and a tad over £200 ( I supplied the oil)

Lame question from a foreigner:

What does included in an inspection 2? Engine oil and change, filters and change, sparkplugs and change and a general overview?

Inspection 2 is:

All Insp 1 items:
Change Oil
Change Oil filter
Change Microfilter
Lots of checks

Plus:
Change air filter

...so very basic really. The other stuff like brake fluid is done on a 2yr basis. Lambda sensors are every 120k miles, spark plugs every 100k miles. There doesn't seem to be any requirement to replace coolant at all.

It's not how I would want my car serviced. I do oil, oil filter, air filter, microfilter & brake fluid every 7,000 miles or 2 years. Spark plugs, transmission fluid, coolant change every 40k or 5 years.

Every thing else just inspect and change as necessary.

They just quoted me nearly £600!!!

No thank you

:P

My Local BMW dealer (Halliwell Jones North Wales) quoted me £739 for inspection 2! Insane price. Their customer service is shocking as well so I walked. Got it for £399 in the end from my local BMW specialist. Still steep perhaps but not many specialists around where I live.

I suppose it depends what an inspection 2 includes. BMW quoted as follows...

•Engine oil is drained and the engine is refilled with BMW approved oil
•Oil filter is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW oil filter
•Microfilter(s) is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW microfilter
•Air Filter is removed and replaced with a Genuine BMW air filter
•Spark plugs are removed and replaced with BMW approved spark plugs
•For vehicles over 10 years old this may be referred to as an Inspection Il service. Please refer to your owner's manual or speak to your service advisor for more information
•Relevant service light reset
•Recommended every 18,000 miles or 2 years from last inspection. To alternate with and Inspection l service if applicable

I'm a bit surprised there's no mention of coolant or brake fluid change. Wouldn't that normally be included in an inspection 2?

Oh and I should correct myself, they're quoting £429 not £439 as I originally said. Still...

Spark plugs are included in an Inspection 2 buddy.

But yeah, if we’re talking value for money maintenance I agree, you’re better off following a routine for fluid changes and replacing parts when necessary than following BMW’s service regime.

Nevertheless it’s important to follow BMW’s service regime for resale purposes...

A way around it would be to get the additional fluids (coolant, diff oil, gearbox oil etc) included in Inspection 2s and keep the receipts for when it’s time to sell up
