Inspection 2 service?

Hi all
I’ve been looking at a Z4m roadster which is currently listed for sale on autotrader, I checked the service history and it’s always been done at BMW or a BMW specialist. I decided to ring the garage where it had its inspection 2 as there was no proof of what work had been done, they said they do not check the valve clearances as part of there inspection 2 as there is no need. The guy said he has worked for BMW for 20 years and he has not known one to ever need doing (something about BMW not providing the right size shims). Would this be something I should worry about? It has put me off the car slightly :|

Sound like a load of bull. I’d steer clear unless the price reflected the shoddy history.

BMW do provide the right shims, and you can buy them individually or as a kit yourself.

Exactly what I thought when the guy was explaining his reason for not checking, it’s not in the service schedule for a laugh.... unfortunately price don’t reflect this but I’m unsure if the dealer knows

I spend a lot of time commuting these days, could use the time annoying someone

It’s the one at James Paul in Horsham, £15.990 with 60K miles,. The garage was Steve rowley bmw specialists in Cheltenham

The guy was so sure there was no reason even to check it as it would never need doing

If you like replacing cams / cam followers then I guess you could just sack it off. Sure way to help knacker those out quicker I imagine.
I’ve had small adjustments on various shims every service I’ve had so if they’ve never been done I’d been amazed.

Not the one i was thinking then , they also have a silver one for sale that has some noticeable errors in the history  it seems the more owners & years are added the more wayward some of the history can become .

My Ins2 is due soon and I called a ‘specialist ‘ with ///M stripes on their name , he gave me a price of about £700 iirc but said they don’t do the valve clearances as they don’t have the right tools.......... mines going to my friends garage where I know it will be done properly and at the right money

I assume the above won’t doo the job Daz.

If they don’t have the tools for that job I’m surprised they could change a wheel.

Correct Steve, they’re the company that don’t have feeler gauges

Has anyone got an official document which outlines what exactly is done during an inspection 2 service which I can send to the dealer?

Try telling them to take a look at the service booklet that comes with the car. The one with the stamps in from the places that should have followed that schedule outlined in it! The ignorancy surrounding this stuff from supposed specialists is amazing. Not hard to read the service booklet that comes with the car ffs.

Eta sorry this photographed page is for inspection 1, inspection 2 adds diff / box oils, plugs and some other things iirc, but both show valve clearances as part of the schedule for sure.

Lovely cheers for that Tom
I do not own the car yet so had nothing official indicating this check needs to be done, the dealer said they would get the valves measured and adjusted, the cars on 60000 miles,. As this was not done during its inspection 2 do you think any damage could have been done to the engine?
