Inspection 2 Cost

Hi all,

Not sure this is the right place for this topic. I had my MOT done this morning from local BMW, out of curiosity I asked them for a quote on inspection 2 and this is what they came back with:

Now this is way more than I thought it would be. Has anyone done inspection 2 recently, if so can you share the cost? I will be going to RBM or Redish (if they can even fit me in) but just curious what other BMW garages are charging.

Thanks

As above, go to a reputable Independent BMW Specialist, I’ve had 2 on my car, £750 and £650

Punchy labour rate @£155/hr :!:
I do mine myself but I recently enquired in may when I was getting parts. The same labour at Cotswold is £481.77 so like £90/hr

I think you 'll find the actual bill would be quite a bit larger since they're missing loads of parts, e.g 5 extra spark plugs, 13 little gaskets, 6 spark plug gaskets which are now an almost unbelievable £30/each, diff oil, gearbox oil etc etc..

Thanks for the feedback. Yep definitely wasn’t planning on going to them, was just curious what the cost looks like. Plan is to take it to Redish, Areeve or RBM. I want few additional things done so will see who is best suited for it.

Cheers gents, have a great weekend.

That labour rate is Porsche OPC territory, which is a rip off. I used Redish to maintain my M Roadster and they were brilliant.

And they give you those prices with a straight face!

Not only are their labour costs astronomical but they are not shy of marking up all the parts by at least 100%.
I am definitely in the wrong business!

If you put some tape over the 'M' badges, the costs will be significantly less. :o :o

Another shout out to Redish from me. They did my Insp 2 on my MC plus flush coolant, vanos check and something else I cant remember for circa £1100 in April and they were excellent. Obv cheaper options out there but given the car was new to me I was looking for additional peace of mind which they gave me, so worth it to me

They have put 24 valve shims on the list but you only need a few

Also diff oil is missed off the list

Interested to know what the £65.00 gasket is? Also what are the labour increments; ie what is ONE unit of labour (6 mins?).

Which parts are you referring to? Other than the oil I don't see any mark up going on? Yes, you could get non genuine parts cheaper but that's not really the same thing.

£65 one is the rocker cover gasket
AW units are indeed 6minutes

These things amazed me this time round
B11.12.7.831.271* D00D05 ROCKER COVER 6.00@ £27.02 £162.12 S - yes folks that's £162.12 +VAT for 6 little rubber rings... - ordered from bmw march '21 last time and they were £7.69 each. Needless to say I sent them back for refund when I received the invoice, and bought a fair amount of stock I could find at the old price from various places. I found 12 Hack had in stock at £9 or something each, now... £34!! scary.

There is no such thing as 'genuine BMW parts', though. BMW don't make any of them. I was thinking of the air filter (probably MANN) at £45 (ex VAT) and spark plugs (NGK or Bosch) twice the price you could buy them for.

And the oil is double what I pay a my local garage, with their mark up included. £22.40 per litre plus VAT = £26.88.

Castrol Edge is £35 for 4 litres at Halfords including the VAT! And they will have a decent mark up on that too!

? There is, and they do (admittedly not things like filters and plugs). Take the gaskets for example, yes you can get reverse engineered ones but they're generally regarded as being inferior.

The oil is ridiculous I agree, but btw its £52.49 at halfords for the castrol, S54 uses 10W60

Those labour rates are over 5 pence per second! :o So they are charging over 5 pence per second to 'inspect' the bodywork! Anyone could do that for free, as long as your eyes work!

Do you seriously think that there is a little workshop in the corner of a BMW plant that are stamping out gaskets 24/7?
I very much doubt it.
Gasket manufacturers will be making them to BMW specs, yes, but those companies will not be anything to do with BMW. On a Tuesday they will be stamping out a batch for Dacia to their specs.

But that's the point, if they are made to BMW specs and are only available from BMW, then that to me is a genuine BMW part and I'm generally happy to pay for it and to also receive the 2 year fitted warranty on any genuine part.
If you can find out for me who makes the gasket for them then great, in the meantime I'll carry on using my 'genuine' parts :P

You seem to be now defending the stupidly expensive parts prices (that you don't want to pay from the original post).
I don't honestly care how much you pay for your servicing; I don't do it that way. I do it way, way cheaper and get the same results.

My point is that BMW charge way too much for everything, and 'specialists' are not exactly bargains either. It has a 'knock on' effect to the whole of the industry, which is why my local back-street mechanic owns a dozen classic Fords worth hundreds of thousands.

I don't quite understand why, or when, having a car serviced went from being another everyday expense to needing a re-mortgage TBH.

I guess you didn't really read my post as you would see I do the servicing myself so don't pay anything. I do buy genuine parts where I see fit, 9 times out of 10 I don't find the small premium to be a big deal. Would I pay £15 more to BMW for a £50 rocker cover gasket from autodoc or whatever that is known to leak? Yes, quite happy to thanks.
My point in the original post was about the incredible price increase of the spark plug gaskets, this is unusual and whether this will also be reflected in the aftermarket I'm not sure. Assuming it's not I will not be paying BMW 10x more for a part, that is of course ridiculous. I have the next 3 inspection service parts already covered though so it will be some time before I have to use non genuine inside my engine!

@boyo and @lawerwnceW what was the wait time for Redish when you booked?
We are going back a few years but it was 3 months from memory. Well worth the wait for a really professional outfit.
