Inspection 1 Survey

At what mileage did most folks here take their Z4 for Inspection 1? I've got about 38K on the meter, and I'm about 100 overdue. I think the inspection intervals are variable, but am curious who has gone longer/shorter.

Also, did any of you have to pay anything? From what I understand, in addition to regular oil changes, all service is supposed to be free for 50K mi./4 years.

Inspection 1 at 38k miles? Are you sure the car hasn't already had inspection 1 done and it's the oil service that's recently overdue? You're correct that the service/inspection intervals are variable, calculated from fuel consumptions. Inspection 1 at 38k miles sounds a little too high even for a regular Z4.

On my Z4M, the first oil service was done at 11k mile, with 1800 miles left on the countown clock. At the rate I'm going I'll probably have Inspection 1 done at 23k~24k miles.

On my '04 3.0i SMG, Inspection 1 was done at about 27k miles, with 1k miles left on the countown clock.

Yeah all scheduled maintenances are free during the first 4 years/50k miles, including free annual oil changes and free brake fluid changes every 2 years.

ive got about 40,000km's on the clock and am 2500 off my inspection 1 being due!

tossing up whether to get them to do it, or get the bmw mechanic who i know (would be the guy doing it at the shop anyway) to just do it for me on the side!

I had Inspection 1 last November at about 24k miles, but the first oil service was time-based rather than from mileage. If you're doing more than 8k miles per annum then Inspection 1 should be at about 29k miles.

Over here we don't benefit from free servicing (or at least I don't!), so mine cost me £295 (at the time about $560, currently about $440. It's a good time to visit lil' old England!).

Not sure if mines been done, it had a oil change and brake fluid change before i picked it up and its on 14k now and is saying 15k till inspection 1. I think this will come down though as i do alot of short journeys and only do 3-4k a year.

If it says Inspection on the service indicator then it will be due next. An '07 car would be due and Oil Service at 14.5k miles or in early '09, which ever comes first. If you only do 4k miles per annum then you'll hit the time limit before miles, regardless of driving patterns. So expect Inspection 1, brake fluid and coolant changes on your two-year ownership anniversary.

Costs when last I checked: Inspection 1 £295; brake fluid change £80; coolant change £140

(Yay! Just ticked over to 50 posts, I'm now a Member. Woo!)

27/06/2005 15k Oil Service
06/12/2006 26k Dealer Check etc when I purchased & Brake Fluid
14/02/2008 33k Inspection 1
20/11/2008 39.5k Brake Fluid

And my dealer screwed up the service indicator so it's saying next service is Inspection! But I've no idea when I should be getting the oil service - ie wait for the distance to tell me or 12 or 24 months after the Inspection 1 was done - any ideas?

It'll be February 2010 or about 47k miles; the intervals are the same between Oil Services and Inspections, and the service book says two years maximum between oil changes (or at least for UK pre-facelift cars, but presumably all cars using oil to BMW LL-01).

Cheers for the info, as i got the car from a bmw dealer that would be why they've done the oil and brake fluid as they have to do it if its due in the next 4000 miles. Brake fluid check says its not due till 11/10 so no service costs for the next 2 years for me :)

Inspection 1 at a local bmw indi garage has quoted £215 which by the sounds of it is a good price.

Since this is my first service in this car, I'm wondering if the "inspection -175 miles" display I get when starting the car means "get an oil change ASAP" or "get inspection 1." For '06 and beyond, are there 2 separate messages? Perhaps this is just for an oil change...

I would say it is for inspection...

dealer should be able to tell from reading the memory on your car key :D

Just to clarify: this is my first service since buying the car used from a dealer. I have no clue what service was already done to the car prior to me owning it.

Unless by some freak occurance they've managed to mess the cylce up (as in Gannet's case), if it says Inspection then it means Inspection. There are two separate messages on all cars; if it's oil it says "Oil Service x miles".

Oh, and if it says "-175 miles" I'd probably get it in quickly, as it's past due.
