Inspection 1 shock

Was just browsing for prices for my impending Inspection 1 (900 miles to go), and had the usual look at MDD, but thought I'd call around just in case there were any other offers on at dealers close to home/office.

I saw plenty of the 'M Value Servicing' offers at £699, including at Berry BMW Chiswick, so I called them up to check whether they'd honour that price for an almost identical Z4M.

The girl on service reception couldn't tell me but promised to get back to me. This she did, but I was shocked to hear that the price would be £1,150 :o
I asked her to double check, considering the e46 M3 could have the same job done for about 50% of that price. She went away, double checked, and confirmed that was the price.

So, I'll be paying a visit to my current friends at Knights (Stoke/North Stafford) at £685 - even though MDD are asking slightly less (£669) for the same dealer. MDD prices for other, less conveniently located dealers are Bowker (Blackburn/Preston) £603, and Sandal (Huddersfield) £583.

Wow, £1,150. Sure they didnt get Inspection 2 price?

How can they justify that much of a difference?

I don't think there is a Value Service for the Z. And I would agree with DPG £1150 is more like a dealers price for Inspection 2, but even so still a bit high.

Andi.

I double checked, and their I2 price was closer to £1400.

I asked her what the difference in servicing between an S54 in an e46 and an S54 in an e85/86 - but she couldn't explain the discrepancy, only kept reiterating that the e46 M3 offer was a special offer that couldn't be applied to the Z4M.

Never mind, I was just hoping to be able to drop the car off at a dealer 400 yards from the office on the Monday and pick it up when I left on the Thursday. It now means I'll have to drop the car off on Friday (2 hour round trip), get back to work (at home luckily), use the courtesy/hire car for the week (probably a gutless Mini or 114), and then do the same 2 hour round trip the following Friday to pick it up.

Sopers Lincoln getting ours for I1 tomorrow. 580!
Getting brake fluid done too. 60 ish.
I could get it at a similar price, but the petrol cost to get to some of these places would have wiped out any saving.

Anyway, it's my last dealer service as I'm getting them to do a final once over to make sure there's nothing I can claim off the warranty before I cancel it. Probably wouldn't be able to claim anything at 102k anyway!

I got sort of lucky. Went on MDD and the nearest dealer on there was scunny, 50 Miles away. But that's close in Lincolnshire so they price matched, only 25 miles, and an X1 to run around in.

Sandal Huddersfield is my local dealer so good to know their prices are reasonable.

I have previously been lucky to talk cooper Chelmsford into doing the work for the value servicing price, did require a face to face with the service manager though.

Makes me laugh that the special on the M3 doesn't apply to the Z4. Probably due to the E46 popularity, BMW want to 'win' the servicing. I actually thought there was more work involved with the M3, I believe a definite headache over the Z4 is the work involved/frequency at which the tappets need to be changed so I would have thought the servicing would be more reasonable on the Z4. It's quite possible the person you spoke to made a mistake with the price, wish I had a pound for every time I've asked a BMW dealer about the E86 M and they have no idea what I'm on about and that even includes sales!

The e46 M3 and e85/86 S54 engines require exactly the same frequency of valve clearance/tappet adjustments/checks.

In fact the e85/86 should be easier as the engine is further away from the bulkhead, and should be easier to work on.

In fact it should be much cheaper as they won't have to do check for rear subframe cracks.

Close to £700 for insp 1 is scandalous and I would never pay anywhere near that.
What would you consider a 'reasonable' price then? £600, £500, £400?

At some point you've got to realise the job is being done for less than cost, and thus they're either not charging for labour, or corners are being cut somewhere (such as reusing the gaskets, replacing the oil filter but not the oil, etc.

If it's too cheap then it looks suspicious.
