Just had an email from my dealer, Blue Bell in Crewe. The service guy Mike has just sent me some photos of the job in progress & a short update so far.

"Hi, your deconstructed oil filter shows a very small amount of bearing shell material but nothing to worry about. The oil came out with no metallic traces at all. Only 2 shims required. Number 2 inlet. This could be turned into a show car !!!"

Will try & add the photos shortly.

If you do facebook, you should be able to see the photos here https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?...1618176544256.605145.836639255&type=1&theater

What a service!

My local stealer emailed me a video of the work they were planning to do on my company 1 series. It made be laugh being an engineer myself when he said "this is our measuring device (on the rotors) which was a micrometer, but to the average Joe probably reassurance. I definitely want some proof when I get my ///M Inspec 1 o 2 done though on the shims.

They have spotted bearing material ?? Which means high lead reading and Thier telling you not to worry , that IS worrying. Send oil for analysis and check lead readings , if very high , Change rod bearings !

X2 worth getting a thorough that checked properly, scary potential consequences

the fact that they are seeing bearing material is even more worrying... cookie you need to get that check asap... Rod bearings on this motor is an all too common issue, bearing material or high lead readings in oil is a huge warning dong.

If "the oil came out with no metallic traces at all" then how could "your deconstructed oil filter show a very small amount of bearing shell material"? The comments are contradictory.

Maybe the filter caught all the metal bits, and thus left the oil metal-free :P
