Inspection 1 or 2?

Hi,

Just booked my car in for an inspection 2 as this was what I thought it needed as it has 62,000 miles on the clock. However, I just dug out my service history booklet and the last thing done was apparently an oil service at 46,000 (I bought the car at 50,000). According to the booklet it's never had an inspection 1, just oil services. Should I phone the garge and tell them this, or is it ok to just go ahead with the inspection 2? Would inspection 1 be a lot more expensive?

Thanks!

It needs an Inspection 2, and it has missed the Inspection 1.

Basically, your service history is shot, but you may as well go with it now.

Has it got a full BMW service history? The order is supposed to be Oil, Insp 1, Oil, Insp 2 and repeat. Services based on counter or every two years whichever comes first

There's some argument (and let's not open it up here again) on whether the 2yr service is only an oil change or should follow the schedule above. If your car has only needed 2 yearly servicing it is possible that it has only ever had oil changes.

An Inspection 2 on a non M car will be about £450 and if it's never had an Inspection service in its life I'd go for that. If you take the key into any dealer they'll be able to tell you exactly what's been done and when.

The history might not be shot. It's 7-8 yrs old with 62000 miles on the clock so just under 9K per year and if you've put a lot of miles on in the time you've owned it then it's entirely possible it's not hit the mileage counter and had a bi-annual oil change with the previous owner(s)

Don't panic, just get it serviced and ask the dealer to confirm the history from their key reader.

Just found a document from a garage called a 'Periodic Maintenance Inspection', done along with the oil service at 46,000 miles. Might that have been an inspection 1?

I'm really ignorant about these things!

Sounds more like generic check of things? Like an mot type thing rather than actually replacing filters, oils etc? Might be wrong though....does it quote a price?

It couldn't get to 62k without needing an inspection service even if it had a load of oil services inbetween.

Didn't you read my recent perfectionistic zed owners thread Stuart? [FACE WITH STUCK-OUT TONGUE AND WINKING EYE]

Will just take all history docs with me to garage and see what they say. They're a local indie that specialises in BMW.

as far as i can tell, the inspection services are just glorified maintenance checks, along with a few other bits.

i wouldn't worry too much. not getting the rear view mirror checked properly isn't going to result in a blown engine

Dammit! I wish I'd have known all about this when I bought the car....

It's not necessarily a problem, so don't worry.

It's more that your car needs an Inspection 2 now regardless. After that, go back to the normal routine:

Oil
Inspection 1
Oil
Inspection 2

Repeat.
