Inspection 1 just done.........

........car literally feels amazing. Much better throttle response for example. Am I just imagining it or could the car really be that much better after a pamper at the car spa?

Included in the inspection 1 was new plugs and it needed a new air con belt as it was perished, two shims after the tolerances were checked and then I had the brake fluid change done too.
Drove the car home and it just felt alive again, pulled great and better than it did before I dropped it off. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm imagining it.

Haha
I feel plugs and new oils straight away
Others sometimes don't:)

It's either placebo or they updated some software.

As for feeling new plugs and oil - unfortunately that is definitely placebo effect. You know it's been shown that people can 'feel' their car is working better if it comes back from a service cleaned vs. not cleaned?

Hi, it's certainly not a placebo effect-as proved here http://youtu.be/WQN-0zvZNbY

Not sure if you were driving a courtesy car while yours was having the service, but getting back into the Zed after driving around in a bog standard motor (whether that's a courtesy car or a DD) can highlight how wonderful these cars are to drive :driving:

You could be right. I had borrowed a 1997 523i. Great car to drive and well looked after, but a z4m it ain't!!

Maybe on a 20 year old engine that hasn't had a service for 20k miles. But I would bet anything that if you're annually servicing a Z4M, you wouldn't be able to tell if the plugs or oil had been replaced by driving it.

They did adjust the valve clearances though and my understanding is that is usually perceptible...

Valve clearances in an inspection 1?

Yes 100%. I or II it doesn't matter, they should be done, and it's important they are. The only real differences between I & II is diff and gearbox fluids iirc. ETA: and plugs, thanks mr wilks.. beat me to it.. (I think filter is done at both?)

Out of curiosity, if you had just bought one of these what would you ask your trusted specialist to look at/do at the first service?

My thoughts so far are:
Check engine mounts/bolts
Check away bar mounts
Replace Vanos filter

Anything else a sensible precaution? My first service will be an oil service so I'll need to ask for specific things to be done on top.

It's through the BMW approved used scheme show is hopefully a good one.

Tom k- were your cams fitted a big outlay for the return in performance. Been reading good things. Just seen them in ur sig?

As I'm sure you are aware any performance upgrades on an N/A engine, particularly one as well developed as these is inherently going to be a big outlay for return in performance. Certainly if you compare it with what the turbo boys are able to do. Having said that, the last 1500 rpm on mine now is quite mental, whether it's worth it, I think only you can answer that question. I had the CSL box fitted to both this and my last M3 and it always bugged me slightly that the engine wasn't working quite as designed by BMW with the airbox fitted.
Of the two mods though I would definitely go for a CSL box conversion first over the cams, it's quite a thing and not really comparable to the eventuri/gruppe m options imho (I have been in an eventuri car not gruppe m though I should add), but then it does cost a lot more. For both mods you looking at similar money 2k ish.
I had my car dynoed when I had done the work and also had a friends m3 done at the same time (which had a CSL box and alpha-n tune). FWIW his made around 355, and mine 372, so I guess that's some kind of idea of the extra power the cams can give.

Given BMW sometimes don't change the plugs as they should, it can definately make a huge difference changing them.
Certainly the case of my car!

Tom k. Hopefully you're heading to some meets this year. Would be good to have a chat about your car. Albeit if we park together I will feel a little less impressed with my own m! Lol
