INSP2 Cost

Hi all,

Just in the process of buying my first Z4M. I've spotted one i like, and hoping to get it delivered in 2 or 3 weeks.

I was enquiring with garages about an INSP2 service. I wanted to find a well reputed garage in Scotland for BMW servicing, from what i've seen on M3Cutters B for BMW in Clydebank get a really good rep.

On the phone they said an INSP2 is ~£360 for the service including new spark plugs. There would be a cost for oil service on top of this.

Does this sound too cheap? Not sure if it's because it's in Scotland or not but all the prices i can find online seem more expensive than this. Don't want them to miss anything out. They said as part of the service they will also check over the car, and conduct a vehicle scan too.

Cheers and if anyone has anywhere else to recommend in Scotland let me know!

Thanks

Sounds a bit cheap.

Oil service - £200
Inspection 1 - £500
Inspection 2 - £700+

Note on inspection services usually a good mechanic will find extra bits and bobs which may or may not need addressing which could then bump up the price.

I'd want a breakdown of what the Oil Service covers, and what the Insp2 covers.

If you add them up, it probably comes to around £500 for both, which sounds a bit cheap (but not out of the realms of possible).

Make sure you're getting:
  • engine oil filter
  • engine oil
  • air filter
  • cabin filter
  • spark plugs
  • diff oil
  • gearbox oil
  • VALVE CLEARANCES
...along with all the standard 'checks' of wipers, tyres, brakes, steering fluid, brake fluid, unions, etc.

As these cars are getting on now, expect about £900-£1000 for everything that will need doing. My Ins II last year came to £1200 (from PMW in Chelmsford), with a few other little bits that needed refreshing.

Yes, I'd budget for at least £1,000 for an Inspection 2 based on what mine cost last month done by forum member Bowser134.

I did have a couple of extras done like a CDV delete and new headlight bulbs fitted, then Ross spotted my cam-chain tensioner was leaking and sticking, I needed new rear trailing arm bushes, a new Vanos filter and 5 shims to get the right valve clearances.

I supplied the oil and headlamp bulbs and although the bill still ran into 4 figures I was happy to pay that. After all it will be quite a while before I need another Inspection service done so to my mind it's an investment to allow me to enjoy the car at it's best.

Thanks for all the informative replies.

I'll do some more calling gg around for a good place up here. I'd like to go to that garage so I'll give them another call and go through the list to make sure I'm getting the correct things! I can't see how they'd get such a good rep for nothing. Perhaps the person on the phone misunderstood what I asked for.

Cheers!

Possibly, or they made the BMW Dealer mistake of quoting for a non-M and then trying to wriggle out of the quote later...due to an 'admin error' :x

Ins 2 can come in various guises. I was quoted similar to you, from a reputable indi I had used before. When I questioned the quote Knowing it was too cheap. It did not include the Rear diff oil change or the Gearbox oil change, or brake fluid change. The final bill was a little over £700, all shim clearances recorded, but none adjusted, very reasonable.

I paid £1100 for an Ins 1 at a main stealer, before I knew better don't do that.

That sounds like the case! I'll phone them again and request the full monty 😬

They did my Insp 2 about 2 years ago, they were very pleasant to deal with and did a good job. Even went out and bought fresh oil because they didn't have enough of the right stuff in stock :D

Had to detail for them exactly what I wanted done as somebody said above, I don't think they do many "M" cars, they were very interested in mine at the time. I think I was somewhere between 600 and 700 for the job.

Cheers Bottom, is that "B for BMW" in Clydebank? That echo's the good reviews i've heard of them. I guess it'll just take a good explanation to ensure the correct work gets done. They seemed really good on the phone. Thanks

Yes, that was them.

It's a fair old drive for me but I thought it was well worth the trip. Edit just saw where you're from, so it's just about as bad for you. At least I'm from Clydebank originally so I was able to find them with no hassle :-)

I'd definitely avoid the BMW dealer in Inverness, since Arnold took it over it's not been very good at all.

My recommendation to you would be to use B&M Centre in Halley St, Yoker, Glasgow who are near to B for BMW. The owner Douglas is an ex BMW master tech who runs a supercharged E46 M3. You can be sure he’ll know exactly what’s required in an Insp 2. Their work is spot on and the prices are reasonable.

That said there must be a decent BMW specialist nearer to you in Inverness.
