Inside the m54 engine

My mates 2001 330 rocker cover gasket has been heated and cooled since new, turning it from rubber into a piece of solid plastic. Engine oil leaking all over the engine and dripping down the front/side. Also made the cabin stink! We fixed it today, and I thought I'd share some pics as its an m54.

It's now running nice and smooth and shouldn't go through oil as quick as it has been! :)

it wasn't that difficult. First time I'd ever done anything of the kind! Supposedly this is common on m54 at 100k. I'd be more than confident to do it on my zed. I was helping my mate who is equally non-mechanical minded - i was happy to try it on his car lol. It honestly was very simple. There's you tube vids that talk you through it step by step.

you can instantly see if yours has a problem. In pic 3, you can see two semi-circles on the engine. This is recognisable on the front of the engine, you'll see plastic covers that slot in to the groves. If you look very close at the pic, you see a V shape groove, and that is where the problem stems from.

Look at the front of your engine. Where metal meets plastic is the gasket. If its oily then you've got a problem. :(

My mates is at 92k (not bad for a 2001), but it's auto.

Wish I'd of taken a few more pics now :(
