2pm today traveling allong a main road with 40mph limit although dead straight, as it passes seafront sand dunes leading into Lytham, Lancs so often pedestrians on one side and always fairly busy. Cyle lane on side I was on. Used to be years back 2 lanes on each side but now 1 and a half on each side because of parking and cyle lane. A road I drove down for over 30 years. Overtaking there is for idiots.
40 metres ahead there was a cyclist on a basic bike, panniers etc. no helmet and obviously a youngish woman. Not exactly moving in a straight line and appeared to be sitting up with rather a straight back. Also appeared to be indicating to pull out right or U turn as her right hand was raised but not looking behind her. U turn would have been insane on this stretch.
Slowed right down and moved well out to middle of road as I slowly approached. Obvious then! She was actually TEXTING with her mobile in her right hand! I have rarely seen such crass, stupid behavior.
This sort of thing leaves you fuming. Who would have had to live with the consequences of perhaps her moving out at the wrong time? Me, not her!
I do wish there was a mechanism for reporting such events. I once tried reporting a driver by giving police time and registration of a vehicle that very nearly caused an accident by virtue of driver on mobile. Police did not want to know. I was apparently not a sufficiently good reliable witness despite having no previous and being CRB checked every year etc. etc.. When I pointed out that an officer on his/her own would have their word taken without question I was met with a "no comment".
Why then do police put up notices after serious accidents appealing for witnesses but refuse to take witness statements before the event. It doesn't make any sense to me.
