Inkey$ Z4 3.0 project diary

Just removed the wheel airbag and tried reseating the MFSW connector to the steering wheel slip ring, but still no dice with my refurbished buttons operating.

In other news though, I checked the wiring around the battery firing circuit, reseated a few connectors and cleaned the terminals - cleared the codes and the airbag light is off again, even after restarting. Lets see how long it stays off for this time

Somebody on Facebook was selling half leather M Sport seats for £500 if that’s of interest.
Thanks. Yes, I clocked them last week and they looked good. Just trying not to spend at the moment, so the seat dream is way down the list!

Since installing your steering wheel have you tried the horn yet?

Just thinking that maybe without knowing you have rotated the slip ring too far or something and broken all the connections?

Good question. Funnily enough I was reading about that very same thing today online, but am yet to check. Also want to check the MFSW fuse (28) to see if thats the problem. Long shot, but worth a look.

It's good to know you are pleased with getting the CDV removed.

I've had it done to two Z4s, an E46 and an E90 and it has improved them all, but some more than others.

I was actually shocked at the difference it made in the Zed. So much better IMO.

Not had time to do much lately, but since taking the steering wheel off again and checking the battery connections around the BST, the airbag light remains off after a few ignition-on tests. Don't believe it will stay off but I live in hope.

Did order a MFSW retrofit cable kit from Sopers today though, for the princely sum of £10.19 delivered. Apparently it was the only one left in current UK stock. Part number: 61120394848.

This is the guide I'll be following to retrofit the cable...

I'm hoping this is the reason my MF buttons dont MF - and I should have known this anyway as I has the exact same problem back in the day (2010 link below) - when a brand new MSport Wheel with buttons was just £242 delivered and I still needed the retrofit kit

Fast service from Sopers in Lincoln. Retrofit cable to enable multifunction capability of my wheel, arrived today. Dual wire with 2 x scotch locks for tapping into the light switch unit.

Does anyone still have the official BMW how-to PDF for this job?

My hard-learned lesson in buying wheels from eBay is going to cost me another £320 to get the 107 wheels re-powdercoated in BMW Silver (may as well have bought a brand new set from BMW if still available!).

When I bought them the finish was fine, but two if them were almost crayon grey with little to no metal flake in the paint.

Dropped the car off at Rimtec Wheels in Meopham for the work and they lent me some rather fetching black MV2s. Quite like the look tbh. Pickup the refurbished wheels in a few days time.

In other news, my airbag light is still off a month after clearing it last. Reckon it was the connections to the battery in the boot as the last time I took the steering wheel off, I removed, cleaned and reconnected all the electrical connectors. So far, so good.

I bought a new set at the time from the dealer, were £900 at the time. That is a few years ago though.

Then I’ve saved myself a whopping £180
