Didn't realise there was an easy fix for the sticky steering - on mine at the time, the dealer replaced the entire steering column (under warranty).

Good suff

Must admit I didn't either, but seems its not as catastrophic as you would first think!
[ref]bigwinn[/ref] is an expert at this. Not had a go myself yet.
I believe turning the spacer between the column and the EPS motor adjusts the degree of mesh between the gears.
Seems to work whatever it does.

My friends lad turned 18 in November and passed his driving test last Monday. What better way to start your driving life than purchasing a 2005 987 Porsche Boxter 2.7.

Was that the lad I met when I dropped the door off?
give us all palpitations.................. what's his insurance bill?

I have read in the past on here to avoid auto settings as it directs heat to feet in winter. This apparently helps sticky steering become a problem.
Maybe an old wives tale but I have kept mine to face or windscreen since forever and so far (touches wood) I have not suffered from it.
Feet are freezing though

You met his older brother. Insurance is £2.5k :o

Heating was not on auto, firmly on me only and not the feet for the entire journey. Fine at B road speeds, horrible at 60mph straightline speeds after a few hours of driving.

I'm having this with mine currently so will be interested to see how yours turns out.

I've done a 15mm clockwise turn and it's loosened it slightly, but still present. Bigwinn has suggested anti clockwise which I'll be giving a go once my back recovers from a roof motor relocation.

From what I've read its anticlockwise to loosen up (steering not the back!)

Errr..away from the pedals?...so clockwise then?!

Always baffles me. I look from the EPS motor towards the column as it seems natural to me, then Stuart tells me he looks from the column out to the EPS motor.
So I 'think' we ended up agreeing that when you sit in the seat you need to push the top away from you................................ or was it the bottom.

I did mine clockwise, as in moving it downwards if you are looking at it straight on.

So next is to try it upwards (anti clockwise).

Ah ha!
So as you sit in the driver's seat you want to move the face of the spacer (eccentric) that is facing you downwards?

I'm still not 100% sure
If anyone can confirm which way you turn to help loosen up the stickiness - as you're looking at the steering column from the drivers seat - that would be great.

If you follow the BMW guidence, then its moving it downwards if you sit in the driver's seat looking forward.

However this hasn't fixed it for me, and Bigwinn has suggested trying the opposite way (upwards) as this fixed it for one of his.

Mechanically I have no idea what it does, but there must be a sweet spot somewhere that frees it up.

 sounds a bit trial and error then. I guess easy to try both ways once you're up under there.

OK, well, there is a standard toothed gear on the steering column and a worm gear on the EPS motor spindle. The worm gear meshes with the teeth but a bit like setting up a diff when you rebuild it, there is an element of play between the two gears. The eccentric spacer acts to slightly move the worm gear in or out, thus affecting how it meshes with the cog on the column. If the worm gear is wedged up tight against the cog then it is effectively feeling a resistance and thinks there's a steering input, so it tries to assist. Ideally you need it set so that the cog on the column has a tiny space either side of the teeth.
This is my understanding of the system operation, put in simple terms.
If I have this wrong then I am happy to be enlightened.

Going to tackle the MSport steering wheel refurb this weekend. In the meantime I’ve been recalling my Zed history…all loved, none forgotten :D
