Initial driving hints

I would say on in most instances - physics will always win over electronics if you drive beyond your, the road's or other drivers' limits... And of course there is no accounting for all the other idiots on the road. Was that your point ?
If the DSC has already intervened, then either your input as the driver, or the roads imperfections, have already sufficiently destabilised your car, and the DSC electronics will attempt to save you. On track, it's considerably safer to explore the limits of your car and your own driving skills. On public roads you need as much in your favour as possible and if your car has DSC why would you want to turn it off and increase your, and everyone else's, exposure to risk, especially if you are having a bit of a "hoon"?

 Agree

I have always said that if I end up in an ///M or performance car of any description then almost the first thing I will do is have someone teach me what it can really do on a track, in a 'safe' environment... Just so I know some of the limits, and how to treat it with respect on public roads.

Good man!

I've also got a Z3MC (S54) with DSC which I've owned for 9 years, and when I first got it, I used to bring the DSC on a lot. An OEM Z3MC needs a LOT of respect and is much harder to drive than a Z4MC. Every time that the DSC intervened, I used it as a "teacher" and I would analyse the scenario and work out what I'd done wrong. Over time, I considerably modified my driving style as well as modifying the car's suspension, and now I very rarely bring the DSC on but I can drive the car (and any others) so much faster than at the outset. I've found that I don't bring the DSC of the Z4MC on either. DSC can be your friend and guardian angel. :D

What did we all do before traction control eh ??
Dunno, I had a TVR with similar power, no ABS and no TCS. Could get a bit tricky in the wet but you had to drive it with respect.

My Cerb had nothing and a hell of alot more power and my Tamora was the same...you just drive them differently

Agreed............

Brought up on RWD myself from Mk 1 Escorts, through the Cosworth era to big BHP supra's..
M3's,M5's and Z3M coupe amongst many others..

My point is learn to drive the car and let your right foot be your traction control..

I totally agree that if your powerful car doesn't have DSC or any other electronic driver aid, you don't have a choice but to drive as is. But if it does have a DSC, what are you hoping to achieve when you turn it off on public roads?

Better driving ability?

The car shouldnt have to tell you that your driving to fast/accelerating to hard...
That should be your decision, not the car..

The DSC doesn't tell you that you're driving too fast or accelerating too hard. That's still your choice with it on.

Arrrggghhh - cant load the video. Damn lucky that a rope got stuck on his alloy to prevent it slipping further down the embankment!?!

Serious lack of talent there..Driving was appaling before the accident

DSC ON would have saved the car..But what would he have learned then,nothing...

Turned in to aggressively and put the power on too early before he had even cleared the apex of the corner whilst the car was unbalanced...

Bad driving will always result in tears whether you have DSC on or off..

Watched that video with disbelief.

I don't claim to drive like a nun in my M BUT.....

Learning your driving skills on a public road... :headbang: .. with DSC off!!!!!

Had those cyclist's been on the bend? Someone's family member... Gone...

So wouldn't he have been better off learning in a safer environment with plenty of run-off rather than having to find out the hard way, with added risk to others thrown in?

True. He must have thought he was a good enough driver though to play without the DSC, recording it on video and with a G-force data recorder on the dash(?), as I'm sure all others do who think they are good enough to turn it off on public roads, where there's little room for error.

This thread has just been posted showing a so-called talented driving god at work off the public road: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=39767#p555319

IIRC Colin has another Z4M to replace the red one he trashed in that accident.

Big worry for me leading 30 Z4s at the weekend knowing that you have 2.0 litres up to 3.4 litres and drivers of widely differing experience and ability. Judging the best pace to set on public roads is always difficult but too slow is always better than the alternative!

Split your party into smaller groups, each with a more experienced leader and rear and set off at intervals to avoid a 30 car convoy.
