Hi there I am thinking about getting a E89 as a replacement for my E85 could anyone tell me what to look out for when buying how they are as a daily compared to what I have now and is the boot space really as small as the pictures on auto express show with the roof down as in mine I am use to almost the same boot space with the roof up or down.

If your using most of the boot space on your E85 roof down I think your going to have issues as space is quite tight. It put me off one years ago as a company car when I looked at one at a dealer. Best bet is to find one for sale locally (if you can) and have a look for yourself. Also if you do some searching I'm sure you'll be able to find the boot space volumes for both cars to give you a better idea

That should work fine providing you don't play golf with the missus on sunny days

My E89 has that stupid ski flap thingy, don't know if clubs would fit through that

Boot space is fine roof up, roof down don't count on using it for any thing bulky. I use mine as a daily and just accept I didn't get it for the boot space and work around it :lol:

I am starting to consider the new Zed a bit more seriously is there any common issues I need to look for when I start to look for my car and any advice on what to try and get on one in terms of options.

Similar to the e85 in some respects, the M style cars give you better seats/wheel/bumpers and heated seats are always desirable, nav as always is personal preference.
Look out for cracking 19” wheels and the usual worn brakes/tyres etc

The metal folding roof can be problematic. The micro switches can go. So ask any owner if they’ve had any done. Make sure it opens and closes nicely.

Some prefer manual whilst some prefer auto. Some like the 2.5n/a whilst others want the 35is. However you’ll generally pay a fair bit more for these.

As for which model, MSport is better specced in general but you’ll still need to look for things like heated seats, wind deflector etc. That in typical bmw fashion, were all optional extras. Surprised they don’t charge you extra for a steering wheel!

Extras are a personal preference, so it’s whatever you want.

The basic stereo is pretty poor too.

Oh and as for boot space, you’ll never get a large space in any car with a metal folding roof. However, I managed to get luggage for 2 for a ten day trip down to Switzerland. Much of that was done with the top down.

Window washer pump, filter gets furred up with slime, needs regular cleaning maybe twice a year.

Cracked alloys, so dumped them and the run flats and replaced with aftermarket wheels and non runflat tyres. Better ride. Quality and better looks IMO :lol:

Doors freeze up in winter too, you may find that a bit frustrating if using it as a daily, I did/do

Other than that, drive it daily, service it regular and enjoy

Not an expert but think most retro fits are expensive.

Best bet is to figure out what you’d like and then look for one with the spec. You’ll find one but it may take time. Start with a look on the messages and galleries here. Then check out Parker’s for ideas of standard spec and extras.

Oh and shameless plug, but depending on where you are, I’m selling a 2.5

The 2.0L turbos should be quicker depending on what model ie. 18i, 20i, 28i

They can be mapped to be quicker than the 3.0 normally aspirated engines 8)

On paper before any remaps the 18i will be slower, the 28i much faster and the 20i around the same as the 23i
