Hi guys,

I'm a very newcomer to Z4 ownership and must say I love it! I've owned a few bmw's in the past but this is the best, even surpassing the 840ci I owned for 2 years.
I', just looking for some info, My car is a 2001 E89 35i and it has everything I could think of anyway. The one thing I miss (as I have a mk2 Lexus is250) is the convenience open/start.
My question is, is this something which can be coded in? if so how? if it can't be coded in, is it something which can be retrofit to the car? again, if so how?
one more quickie? I've seen "carly" bandied about a lot on the forum and just wondered if it was something that is a good thing to have or just money wasted? thoughts and opinions please.

When you say convenience open start do you mean starting the car without being actually in it?
I didnt think this was legal, a bit like turbo timers are apparently not legal.

Hey, no I mean having the key on your person is enough to open and start the car, you need not actually handle the key.
I think you're meaning "remote start" which voids insurance but I'm not sure it's illegal as such.
 
It is an option when building the car but requires a different keyfob and more than likely different electronics in the car. If you dont have it I doubt it can be coded but could possibly be added if your pockets are deep enough.

'tis legal, or JLR are doing something naughty. I can start my daily from my 'phone via the remote app. Came in very handy in Inverness when all was sub zero outside and white and spiteful with it. Truck was toasty and clear by the time I unlocked and climbed in.

The environmental debate is of course another matter.

I believe its only allowed if you can do it and keep the car locked at the same time. As clearly you can. :thumbsup:
 
Yes, I think insurers might get a bit fidgety if it was unlocked and running with no one in situ.

And at last manufacturers are recognising the need to avoid the reputation of making cars that are easy to steal. Long time coming.

Surely that's ok on your driveway though, as that's private property? I could understand if left unattended on the road :?
