Infamous runflats

Having just bough 56 plate 3.0si sport from a dealer we are absolutly chuffed, great service & a good deal. On the test drive no issues etc.
Now haveing the the car back home & driving on your own the steering & feedback is quite dire/bordering on dangerous, braking into roundabouts you feel the car going all over the place due to road iregularities. The roads in bournemouth arn't exactly dirt tracks.
The ultimate driving machine ?
I am just assuming its the dreaded tyres.
I work for a commercial vehicle dealer & even our old sheds (van) arn't that bad.
Has anybody gone back to BMW to see what their response is ?
I pressume it will be negative.
Assuming it is can anyone recomend a good replacement tyre or a wheel & tyre supplier who can supply the correct offset wheels etc, & how much approx a set of 4 wheels & tyres will go for?
With the old one to sell a new set shouldn't be to costly
Thanks in anticipation
Trevor
ps pictures etc to follow, just need the wife to leave the car still long enough

Search is your friend :D

Seriously though, it's not something BMW will do anything about. Falken FK-452's are a common replacement tyre among this forum, as are the latest Goodyear F1s. They'll fit on your existing rims no problem, despite what some tyre fitters (and BMW) will tell you.

Having an alignment check can also help things.

And finally, I find the steering worse on motorways with the Sport button engaged. Switch it off and things really improve steering-wise.

Nothing will improve the situation apart from buying different tyres. Any set of tyres that are the correct size will replace them no problem, and then as many of us on here will concur you will no longer have the invisible man tugging the steering wheel around.

I find the Z4 tracks into the HGV ruts caused by lousy roads and over weight trucks, can be quite disconcerting and I find it often at roundabouts no doubt
where trucks are slowing and motorway's lane one particularly worrying ............I know stay in middle lane :? maybe that is why so many drivers do just that
yes I have RFT Bridgestones

I went down from 18s to 17s and to non runflats
Non run flats are the key thing
10 times better
I too thought I had made a terrible mistake at first but now very happy :D

or switch brand of runflat, michelin's are far better behaved :D

I would also look at getting the alignment looked at

Mr 7

I've just junked my RFTs for 4xVredstein Ultra Sessanta's.............now a much much much nicer car to drive/brake, I really can't emphasise how much difference they make.

See here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=22179&p=313710#p313710

Less then £400 for the lot (225/45/17)

I just ditched the RFTs fitting Falkens, had four wheel alignment, checked the springs and lubricated the two steering UJs - New car!

Super 7: As everyone has said, it`s DEFINITELY the run-flats mate, and nothing else !

The Zed is a superb-handling car which will give you loads of pleasure; it`s just a matter of accepting the run-flats (as I have for the moment, as they`re almost new), or replacing them with real tyres LOL :D

No, seriously mate, don`t let them detract from what is, otherwise, a fantastic car.......... 8)

Welcome to the Forum :)

As everyone is saying loose the RFT they are the problem.... shame on BMW  for fitting such tires to such a fine automobile

They had a choice what they fitted as OEM spec ;) When are we going to see third gen RFT's or have they given up on that idea :headbang:

Sorry chris, it is BMW that made the decision to outfit there fine cars with RFT someone at BMW needs to be FIRED for making such a decision. Believe me a lot of people are pissed off because of it and time will tell how many people will look elsewhere for there next new car. I know yours truly will switch back to Mercedes in 2014 and it will be a 550 SL.

Thanks guys
deffo going to change, but not shure waether to change the wheels at the same time ?

Trevor

I think your wheels should be fine I would not change them, just check them (back wheels) for cracks often. I got myself 4 winter wheels and at least for 4 months will give the OEM wheels a rest.
