Inexpensive trolly jack/axle stands any recommendations?

Hi Guys

One of my rear springs has snapped which I confirmed today by feeling around and pulling out the bottom part of it! I am no mechanic but I have seen a short tutorial video and think even a numpty like myself could do the job! I need a trolley jack and a pair of axle stands but I want a compact one due to storage and I don't want to spend a lot on these items so can anyone recommend anything?

We got our low level trolley jack from halfords wasn't to expensive and they do the axle stands as well as z4's are quite low an ordinary jack wouldn't go down low enough to slide under the car, or a search on good old eBay might bring up a bargin :thumbsup:

Thanks for that but I was hoping for a make/model recommendation as I know there are many more knowledgeable members on here and knowing me I would buy the wrong jack that wouldn't fit properly :)

That is the one :) thanks so much I will ring them up and sort it out and will get axle stands as well

I bought a set of axle stands from halfords quite cheap. They had a ratchet mechanism on them which I would recommend. Much less fiddley than the stands with the pins.

Thanks for the help but I am going down the SGS route as they get brilliant reviews and are a good price.
 
The SGS is great - be careful you don't ruin the crimped end of the lifting bar because I've found it quickly becomes too loose to turn the control valve nut and you have to bend it back into shape.

Also might be an idea to buy a hockey puck to use as a pad adaptor (as many people do!). Drill a hole in the middle then use that to spin it on a lathe or drill so you can carve a circular channel into it. This should fit the SGS jacking plate snugly if you get the measurements right. :thumbsup:
 
I have silverline axle stands. Got them from ebay (blue ones). They do the job well.

Also got a german make low profile trolley jack from there which is fine. Cost about 30 quid.

+1 on the SGS Engineering low profile jack and 6 tonne (pair) ratchet jack stands. Good quality and some good combo deals lately too.
The rubber protection hockey puck idea from MrPT sounds good - the SGS one isn't a great fit for the Side jacking points. I'd recommend the rubber pads for the ratchet jack stands though.
 
+1 for SGS kit. I bought a low profile trolley jack to complement my Halfords unit (the SGS is MUCH better) and I bought their ratchet axle stands and a small hydraulic ram 'in case of emergency' to getthe free delivery. Cost just over £50 delivered IIRC and delivered in a couple of days. Since then, recommended SGS kit to a few people and they all bought and are more-than satisfied. Top kit! :thumbsup:
