Indy Garage Prices

As per my previous thread regarding servicing, I've got a quote from a local BMW specialist to have the following done to my car:

Inspection 2
Coolant flush
Brake fluid flush
Gearbox oil refresh
Diff oil change
CDV Removed
2 front springs fitted (i provide)

The price is a tad over £700 inc VAT. This is for all the parts (except the springs which I am providing) and labor. Initial thoughts are it seems expensive... however I have not had to use a garage for a few years as I have had a lease car, so I'm not too clued up on labor costs these days... does this price sound about right? I do not mind paying the money if the price is fair, just wanting other opinions.

The inspection 2 is £300 inc VAT, so essentially the rest of the things on that list are costing £400.

Thanks

Interestingly I just got a quote from a local indy for very similar things:

Brake fluid change
Engine oil change
Diff oil change
Transmission oil change
CDV remove

And it came to £380. There is 2 hours of labour included at £60/hour excl. VAT, which is quite normal for a decent indy garage IMO. This meant that the oils and brake fluid came to ~£230. Based on the brands and prices of the oils they were planning to provide I have decided to buy and supply my own, saving ~£100 in "parts" and using better brands (Redline for example).

I would say your quote of £400 for everything but the inspection 2 is about right. If you want to reduce the price a bit, ask for a quote with the labour and parts as separate line items so you can see where you can save. On jobs that I am unwilling to do myself (I only do these jobs with a lift), I tend to accept the labour price and hours as long as its not crazy unreasonable.

The VAT soon adds up & spoils a party
parts for the job £160 ish :?

plugs x6 £15 , oil £30 , filter £10 , air filter £12 , coolant £20 , brake fluid £30 , gbox oil £25 , diff oil £25 .

Or breaking it down another way with labour + parts / fluids

oil & filter £85
air filter £30
plug change £60
coolant £45
brake fluid £50
gearbox oil change £60
diff oil change £60
cdv removal £25
change front springs £40 x 2 = £80

totals £495 so add vat £600 , you only need add £10 or so to the list of jobs & it soon hits £700
If its a trusted indy then peace of mind must be worth something , if its a random back street garage id look elsewhere .

Thanks both, they are both very informative posts

Decided I'm going to attempt to change the springs myself and potentially do the CDV delete to save a bit of money if I can - If that fails then I think going by what you guys have said the price I have been quoted for all the work is pretty reasonable.
