Indicator on solid

Hi all,

I just picked up my z4 (2006, 3.0 si Sport) on Tuesday and have been smartening up a couple of bits and pieces (steering wheel trim, seats, etc) - pictures to come! However, i noticed yesterday when going for a spin i VERY briefly had a bulb warning on the dash. It disappeared after about 10 seconds driving so i just carried on my day. When i got back, got out, locked the car - I noticed the inner right indicator bulb was on solid. This seemed particularly weird as the ignition and all lights were off.

Today the same thing happened, the only way i get it to turn this light off is to turn the ignition on and off and lights on and off a few times and eventually it goes out.

I've read elsewhere that the car sometimes illuminates the indicator when the side light bulb is gone, but so far as I can tell the side lights are working (assuming side light means the angel eye).

Do i need to get someone to read the failure codes? Otherwise I guess I'll be blind replacing bulbs until it goes away... but then it could be some kind of wiring/loom issue?

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated, minor hiccup early on in zed ownership!

It's the indication that you have the bulb out in that headlight
I suspect an intermittent fault, so you look and think all is well, but it goes off shortly after

Best to just replace the side light bulb now then?

Ill start taking a look at the mod required to replace bulb only. The side lights are an angel eye in the facelift bi-xenons, right?

It's the sidelight which has failed. Same setup on the e46

I removed both sidelight bulbs which makes the indicators light up permanently like DRLs

Sad I know.
 
So this morning i removed the side light bulb and holder, modified the bulb holder and cleaned all contacts. The bulb looked absolutely fine, but at least if it does go I can now swap the bulb easily. Fault seems to be gone, for now.

Will update here if i get any more issues with it.

Couple of tips for anyone who wants to do the same:
- Do not unscrew the torx bolts all the way on the angel eye bulb holder, they don't need to come out, they just need to be loosened. Take a look at some pictures of the bulb holder if it's your first time.
- Clean the contacts on the bulb holder and wire
- I managed to do the whole thing with the wheel on, with steering full lock in the direction of the light you want to switch
